“Yummy Guyanese food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 25, 2013

Delicious curry! Their rotis are homemade, huge and delicious, or you can get basmati rice. Both come with potatoes, chickpeas or a mix of both. All entrees come with a side (tossed) salad - or soup in winter.

Can also get potato / chickpea / veggie roti so vegetarian / vegan friendly. And if you get rice instead of roti, gluten-free friendly too.

I'm less keen on the jerk, but I think that's because they add bbq sauce to it, so it ends up with jerk bbq sauce. Ask them to hold the bbq sauce if you prefer.

The mixed veggies that go in with the jerk are frozen veggies. Not sure I'd hold that against them as other restaurants may well use frozen veggies too - we just don't see it as the kitchen isn't as open as here. You sit at a counter, and can watch them while they're cooking your food.

The hot sauce has been toned down since last time I had it, but do beware: it does pack a punch! Start small and work your way up!

Prices are reasonable, especially considering the huge portions could easily be split between two people.

The Guyanese couple who own the restaurant are very friendly and chatty. You enter as a customer, leave as a friend.

“I expected a little bit more for Caribbean food.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

Had a roti and double the other day. The roti was pretty big and filling, but it lacked any heat. Maybe I should have asked for them to make it spicy. I may ask if there is a next time. The double was very tasty. It is a bit of a dive, but what do you expect for that location. The owners were very friendly. All in all, not a bad place to eat.

“Best Roti in Winnipeg”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2013

All ingredients including shells, Curry Spice and contents in the Roti are homemade. I've tried several roti in Winnipeg and Famena's is the best!

“Charm, food, people: I love this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 11, 2013

A friend and I first walked into Famena's in the dead of winter, noting the contrast between the bunker-like feel of the surrounding parking garage and the bright warmth of the inner sanctum. The 1950s lunch counter decor, the mouth-watering food from Guyana, and the enthusiasm of Famena and Mohammed are fantastic nourishment. Of course, I freely admit that my enthusiasm may have been enhanced by the fact that 2 months after my initial visit, I returned to Famena's to be greeted by Mohammed, who not only recognized me, but also remembered my crazy Scottish name. I love this place.

“Great roti, large portions”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2013 via mobile

The place is basically a typical hole in the wall restaurant, but with great food and friendly service. Prices may seem a bit steep until you see the size of the roti you get! Appearances are deceiving - don't worry, go on in and enjoy.
