Can't really find too much wrong with the Fairmont Winnipeg - nice location within walking distance of the Exchange District, the Forks, and St. Boniface (across the river). I was here for a conference so got an good rate on the room - $130.

The room was fairly standard (see pics). I was surprised at the quality of the carpets as they looked well used and in need of updating. The light fixtures in the room proved problematic as the switches were a little stiff and hard to operate. Bathroom well appointed with all the extras plus two terrycloth robes (nice touch). Room had an ironing board and iron.

Was able to visit the Gold Floor during my stay on an orientation tour and it was quite nice - might be worth looking into the additional cost of staying at that "level" if comfort and extras are your thing.

Service was excellent and there is free internet available in room and in the lobby if you don't have a laptop. Booking was easy and straightforward.

Overall, if I was back in Winnipeg I'd probably stay at the Fairmont if I could get a good rate. I might try the Fort Garry though for a more "historic" stay (plus it's apparently haunted).

I stayed 5 nights at Winnipeg's Fairmont. This property doesn't have the old world charm of other Fairmonts.

The good...
- updated top floor (21st) open till 11pm: fitness room with a fair amount of newer equipment, good sized indoor pool at just the right temperature, huge steam room
- quick check in and check out. Great front desk and bell staff
- great food in the lounge bar - with live music
- wired internet (free with President's club)
- bar fridge, although stocked, had a bit of room
- great bed with soft comforter and high thread count sheets
- upscale shampoo/soap.
- very central location at Main & Portage, with underground walkway to Winnipeg Square (shopping)
- daily newspapers to my door, and hotel bill final morning
- fully insulated ice bucket
- lots of real wood hangers
- wall to wall window

The bad....
- rooms are tired and too-muted in their decor. As others have stated, a little 'Best Western'
- small whirlpool tub on the top floor
- no snacks vending machine
- old controls for the room heat
- staff providing phone service were not that knowledgeable

The ugly...
- $6.50 750ml water bottle on the nightstand
- my bathroom sink had all sort of ugly black cracks
- tap water late at night (on 2 nights) no hotter than warm

Have stayed here twice in the last little while and I wanted to give this hotel 4 stars but can't really justify more than three.

Likes
- Good sized indoor pool
- Fantastic staff
- Free internet (for club members as with all Fairmonts)
- Good sized rooms

Dislikes
- Hotel is a little bit worn (eg stains on the carpet)
- No in-room safe
- The most expensive bottles of water I've ever seen!

Overall this hotel is ok but expensive for what it is and not upto Fairmont standard.

This is my second stay at the Fairmont. My company has a negotiated rate and while I can fault little things like the carpeting (a little "Best Western", as another reviewer mentioned), the service makes it stand above and beyond. Anything I need - just ask. I got an umbrella to use when it was raining (and forgot mine), the staff is always friendly and helpful, the lounge has good affordable dinners (a good thing when on a small expense account!).
This was my second stay and I'll be back.

I stayed at this hotel for three nights in October 2007. The hotel is very centrally located within walking distance of the main shopping area and central business district of Winnipeg via underground walkways. I had a Fairmont Gold room which is on the top floors with its own check in area (hotel within a hotel so to speak). This gives access to the executive lounge which serves a breakfeast and evening finger food. The lounge staff were excellent, in particular one staff member I have to mention is Heather, she's a credit to the Fairmont. The food in the restaurant was excellent although rather expensive. Good food is also served in the lounge bar.
Taxi fare from the hotel to Winnipeg airport was only about cad$20.
I recommend this hotel (particularly a Fairmont Gold room) for a wonderful stay for both business and leisure traveller.
