After a few weeks of fast food places and chain restaurants with poor quality food (quantity was mostly overwhelming and unwanted) going to Hy's steakhouse in Winnipeg was a real treat and a very good Filet Mignon 8oz steak too. Being so far from the coast I had doubts on my choice of starter and I was right, the Oysters weren't at all good and were served in an unattractive haphazard and clumsy fashion- not enough ice on the underplate and served with tiny quantities of additions including ketchup!!!! The mashed potatoe was a poor portion especially for my son and actually tasted of instant potatoe. The broccoli tasted less than fresh and was severely undercooked (virtually raw!) and when we asked for a glass of water, the glass and water were actually warm on the side of hot to the touch - perhaps the very dim lighting prevented the server from noticing this but his sense of touch would have surely told him otherwise. I wasn't happy with being sat virtually next to the noisy kitchen although these downsides were caste into shadow because I was in the excellent, wonderful company of my son, his girlfriend and her lovely mother. It was difficult to catch the eye of our server but eventually we asked another to bring some mustard. Unfortunately he couldn't understand what was being asked of him - he eventually told us there was no mustard and offered ketchup instead as if there was any similarity whatever for the purposes of enjoying a steak. We settled for horse-radish which came in tiny quantity. The steak was very good indeed but the overall price of the bill for this singular pleasure was excessive in the extreme. My aperitif of Campari and Orange was mixed together before it was brought to the table instead of the preferred, traditional and careful adding of the orange to the Campari so that the 2 different ingredients can be seen and admired for the wonderful drink it is. This needed to be served in a tall glass..... not a stubby whisky glass. Thankyou Hy's for a good steak. I shall be back for this and perhaps a salad.
