“What are you talking about?”

I read some of the reviews and I'm just shaking my head - are we talking about the same restaurant? We went to Resto Gare for dinner and everything was superb. The atmosphere was cozy and romantic. The service was fantastic and attentive. The food was delicious and the serving sizes were very generous. Overall, a great evening and we will definitely go back!!

“Fabulous French Cuisine in the Heart of the French Quarter”
Reviewed April 1, 2010

If you want a truly unique dining experience with a real French flavour then visit Rest Gare. It has delicious food, excellent service and unique decor. They have refurbished an old rail car to use as one of their dining rooms. Excellent wine selection and the menu is always fresh and exciting as they change it often and use Manitoba cuisine. Try the Bison or Pickerel for a real Manitoba experience.

“Slow service and the food was kind of gross.”
Reviewed February 11, 2010

A friend and I thought we would try out Resto Gare since it has a new name and new menu. The prices were OK, but the food was really not good. Our appetizer, Coquilles St. Jaques was luke warm and it was smothered in pizza cheese, not Guyere like the menu stated. The mushrooms in it were not cooked at all, and the scallops were tiny, over-cooked and stringy.
Apps came along with a bread basket and some garlic infused oil and balsamic. The oil and vinegar was arguably the best part of the meal. Delicious!
Our main dishes came next. The filet mignon was just OK, but the shrimp linguini was rather disgusting. The menu described it as being a "carabonara" sort of thing, but it ended up being a pile of greasy noodles with shrimp and rooster sauce squirted on top. Not quite what we were expecting and it so incredibly greasy I would have a hard time believing the sauce was made from any thing other than bacon fat. The pasta was dried out and crispy in spots, like left over pasta had been re-heated. We will not be going back nor will we recommend this restaurant to anyone we like. :o)
I gave it two stars because our waitress was fine (slower than usual, but not the worst service I've ever had) and the decor was cozy and nice. The wine was also good.

“good food”
Reviewed November 1, 2009

After looking at the 2 reviews posted (extreme opposites) I am inclinded to agree with both. I went there and was seated in the train car part, which was kind of cool. It was a great atmosphere and was romantic. That said, i could see people's issues with the service. It is really slow, although we didn't have as many issues as the person who gave the bad review so far. It was slow, but we were offered drinks, desserts and also a recommendation on the dinner. We were very happy with our food and summed the slow service up to more opportunity to sit and chat, which we felt was the way it's usually done by the french (long meals, great conversation!). In the end we found it actually pleasant to have been able to get out and have a long dinner. If I do recall there were service issues with the table beside us. A large group...actually sounds just like the group described in the bad review here. I think their meals came out at different times and they kept having to ask for stuff. I may give it another go, but with any fine dining establishment, don't expect to go and just scarf down your food in 20 minutes and call it a night...enjoy the evening! Everyone is too rushed these days and expects rushed service.

“The very worst of POOR Service!...‎”
Reviewed May 24, 2009

This was a very disappointing evening for ALL of us. We had even gone earlier in the day and checked the place out since it was now under a new name and decided to give it a try with a group of friends.
There were 8 of as in all. we started the eveing being seated - fine, and then waited for almost 30 minutes before we actually had to get up and point out to them that no drink orders had been taken. we had already asked for water and that took way too long as well.
It was not oberly busy and the person serving us had been at the restaurant a long time - but was obviously not very concerned about serving ANY of us properly.
In particular - they would always forget one of our freinds orders and serve it well after the others had arrived - so she was NOT very happy in particular.
No bread, cuttlery was missing, no water refills, etc... etc... it was truly incredible!!
One of the women in our group had actually taken the waiter aside and said the service thus far had been unacceptable and to please reconsider what was happening and try to make it better from there on in. This was BEFORE entrees, and - well - nothing had changed.
To be truthful it was such a bad experience that we don't even remember how the food was. On top of it NO offers of wines with dinner and NO offer of dessert or coffee after Dinner as well. I guess by this point he just did not want us there.
I and 2 of my friends left without paying ANY tip. It was just that bad.

IF you go - you are taking your chances. Try someplace else!
