“A prairie cultural gem!”
Reviewed September 26, 2012

The Winnipeg Symphony, now celebrating its 65th Season, is a true cultural gem. I was there for the opening weekend and found this orchestra in great form. They have some terrific new players (check out the principal oboe and the horn players) who featured in Strauss's Don Juan, and also in Beethoven's 7th Symphony, where the strings also really shone. Young Music Director Alexander Mickelthwaite has clearly rejuvenated this group of players, who play their hearts out for him. This is really still one of the top 6 orchestras in Canada!

I was also blown away by all the activity in the lobby before, during intermission and after. Executive Director Trudy Schroeder had all her staff out, raising money for the 65th anniversary, selling CD's (Glenn Gould's 1959 performance of the Brahms D Minor), raffling off a Yamaha piano, and women's guild selling lovely scarves etc. This is an orchestra in more than survival mode, they're figuring out what it takes to thrive in the 21st century.

My only complaint is the hall (no fault of the orchestra) - Centennial Concert Hall - I had great seats in the middle of the first level and the sound is so distant. It's a multi-purpose hall - good for opera, pops, non-classical amplified etc. But for classical music it could use some substantial acoustic improvements. Then the WSO would sound even better.

Still - don't miss a chance to hear this great orchestra. They have pride of place in the Canadian classical firmament...

“First class and varied concerts”
Reviewed April 6, 2012

This is truly a world class orchestra. We have a yearly subscription to the WSO and
an excellent feature of the subscription is that you can easily change from one night to another or to a different concert altogether, making it very user friendly.
