We traveled to Churchill just prior to official Polar Bears season, early Oct 2012. We also did not want to be with groups nor paying outragous price for seeing polar bears, so we planned our own trip by train, from Seattle. Booking for train and hotel in Churchill was simple with reasonable price. We did not know what to expect in booking for seeing Polar Bears. Counting on seeing Polar Bears raoming around Churchill is not reasonable since Bears Patrol is tight for safety of its citizens and visitors. So, you have to find an outfit to take you to the bear backyards. It is not possible to get there on your own, walking or rental car. We picked Tundra Buggy. The staff was very easy going, not pushy at all, provided info needed and answered our questions to satisfaction...we booked a day before the drive. Pricing is expensive, but not unreasonable since all stuff must be shipped into Churchill. Our driver was more than qualified, friendly, knowledgable....we saw bears, foxes, hares and some other birds...the weather was beautiful...the snacks and lunch were tasty and hefty....including coffee and hot chocolate.
