We used Great White Bear Tours when we were on the Nat Hab Polar Bear tour. The rovers were very comfortable, the driver were extremely friendly and had excellent spotting skills. We had Lisa 1 day & Michael for 2 days and they made sure we had the best viewing vantage points possible while being very mindful of the bears.

The key to these tours is excellent guiding. Our guide, Justin, was extremely knowledgeable about the history, flora, and fauna, and anything else. The Tundra buggy was a wonderful way to travel. We were kept in good order with coffee and hot chocolate snacks and four course lunches. We were able to get good photos of the bears, hares, and foxes in this magical land. There were many very interesting evening presentations as well. Group meals made this an enjoyable trip. As a photography tour we only had 16 in a Tundra Rover compared to its capacity of 30.

Hi Tonypose, thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you had a wonderful experience with us in Churchill and enjoyed your time abroad our Polar Rover. While our Polar Rovers can comfortably fit 30 guests we choose to leave spaces available so that everyone is able to get a window seat and have space for those big jackets and cameras.
We thank you for being one of our bear season guests and hope to see you again in the future.

Hi jacqui3744,
Thank you for your review and I am are sorry to hear about your back. Stewart has been with the company for many years and has a wealth of knowledge as well as a keen eye for wildlife. The trail system we follow in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area was created by the military and can be bumpy in areas, especially when the ponds are beginning to freeze or snow drifts cover the trails after a storm. Our drivers take a lot of care in minimizing the bumps along the way by traveling at low speeds and avoiding large rocks along the trails. I hope that the lunch and coffee breaks provided a rest for your sore back and I am happy to hear that you enjoyed the warm lunch provided.

We thank you for being one of our bear season guests and hope to see you again in the future.

Sincerely,
Dorota Walkoski

A great way to see polar bears. They are not always right next to the vehicle but you get great viewing. We say about a dozen over two days. Some wishing 200 feet, some binocular distance.

We travelled with NatHab and used the Great White Bear Tundra Buggies. The drivers are amazing, in that they respect the habitat and environment, never leaving the designated roads to view the polar bears.

We flew up for a quick trip. This isn't a budget friendly activity and we picked prime season (November 1) for pretty much guaranteed viewing...so we decided to chance it with 1 day on the polar rover.

The booking process was easy (we booked directly without an agent). Emails were prompt and phone calls were always answered. We received an email a few days before regarding pick-up time. We were picked up on time (7 AM) from our hotel and were at the rover before 8 AM.

There are 32 seats on the rover and we had 29 on ours, including a 16 person group. There is a guide on the rover explaining everything you want to know about the polar bears and a very experienced driver/spotter. The windows on the rover open fully for pictures and it is very easy to move around to get the best viewing spot. There is an open area on the back for even better views. There is a bathroom on the rover (a bit bigger than an airplane toilet). Coffee/tea/hot chocolate provided. Stew and homemade cookies for lunch.

On our day we saw 12 bears. Most were at a distance and were sleeping. It was a windy day and they were hunkered down. The day before people had seen 30! However, the highlight was a bear who did walk up and then jumped up 8 inches from my face!!!!

The rover stays on trails and is not easy to maneuver, so it's a bit different than an African safari vehicle. The viewing is also different....requires a lot of patience. You sit and wait and hope the bear will walk up.

If I had to do it again....I'd probably do a second day to try and get another close-up experience. But at $450 CAD/day it requires a deep pocket book.

Thank you for your detailed review Naomi. We are happy to hear that you saw 12 bears on your day trip and one so close up. Our Polar Rovers do follow a trail system throughout the Churchill Wildlife Management Area which ensures optimal polar bear viewing without disturbing the natural landscape. Drivers have a great eye for spotting wildlife and keep in contact with each other to ensure guests see as many bears and other wildlife as possible.
We hope that you get another opportunity to travel to Churchill and consider us again for your tour.

We stayed in the lodge on the tundra and everything exceeded expectations. The cabins were small, but larger than I had expected, and well insulated from cold and sounds. The expeditions leaders from Nat Hab were outstanding. Very experienced and knowledgeable. The food was amazing. I had not expected this quality food in a place so remote. Staying in the lodge cost more but it truly paid off in terms of polar bear viewing. The rovers are very unique vehicles, designed and built by locals and allowing you to roam the tundra.

I have wanted to see polar bears all my life.
I had a special birthday and booked the trip 2 years ago (ish, Churchill expression!)
We were so lucky to see 27 ( twenty seven !! ) bears on our first full day and two very up close and personal plus a mum and “cub of the year”
This was just so incredible and words really can’t explain how it felt.
Anne our tour guide from Natural Habitat ( and from Montana ) was brilliant and so knowledgeable
This is the trip of a lifetime and I willnever forget
Thank you so much for making my wildest dream come true!

Hi Fiona,
Thank you for your review and I am happy to hear that a lifelong dream came to fruition. Our Polar Rover drivers are fantastic at spotting wildlife and communicating with each other to find as many bears as possible for guests. It sounds like your driver did a great job of finding you twenty seven bears and in close proximity as well.
Thank you for being one of our bear season guests and we hope to see you again in future.

Sincerely,
Dorota Walkoski

Polar bears flock to the tundra awaiting the freezing of Hudson Bay. But don’t be fooled by the marketing materials: the chances of a bear leaning on your vehicle are slim

Despite that, there were bears galore on each of the 3 days I was on a Tundra Rover. We saw family units and singles, close by and binocular needed. Sometimes there were 2-3 bears near each other. Seeing them in their natural environment is unforgettable. You’ll also have a chance to see ptarmigan, fox and snowy owls.

Drivers are in radio contact so if a bear is sighted you have a good chance of taking part in the viewing pleasure. Arnar in particular has some kind of psychic connection with the bears: he knows where to find them and where they’ll move to next

The vehicles are spacious and well heated and the observation deck a delight. But despite the 6-foot tires the road is extremely bumpy. If you’ve got stenosis stay at home. Otherwise take a Dramamine before heading out just in case.

My group saw 30+ bears over 3 days. Can’t promise that experience for everyone but you can’t watch this nature show without being moved to your core

Hi LizGrrr,
Thank you for your detailed review and I am happy to hear that you had a great experience with us. It sounds like Arnar did a fantastic job providing you with many different bear and other wildlife observations and his years of experience have given him an uncanny ability to read animal behaviour. Our drivers, especially seasoned ones like Arnar, take the utmost care in avoiding large rocks and driving at low speeds to avoid the less than desirable areas of the trail system but bumps are unavoidable on such rough terrain. Our Polar Rovers are designed to make the tour as comfortable as possible and coffee, lunch and photo breaks allow guests to walk around and stretch.
We thank you for being one of our bear season guests and hope to see you again in the future.

Sincerely,
Dorota Walkoski

We saw about 8 bears, three pretty close up (I suppose from about 60 - 100 yards away), and although we heard stories of seeing bears with cubs, and bears coming right up to the vehicle, we came to Churchill knowing you cannot expect guarantees from nature, but also knowing that this is prime time for seeing bears (we went out October 22). I have read other reviews. We did our research about the best time to come, and did Churchill at the end of our three week vacation in order to maximize the likelihood of seeing bears. Yes, the day was expensive, but as it turned out worth it. Our driver Rick made it happen. He was always on the lookout with his binoculars, and even after we had seen the best, on our way back he was vigilant and found another bear pretty close by. Pick up was prompt, lunch was as represented, and I think there were 28 of us in the tundra buggy. I think all three companies authorized to do this kind of tour go to about the same places so I would decide based on rep of the company, and if you choose this one, try for Rick as your driver. The lady on board, perhaps retained as a spotter, was there more to promote the town and the different tours offered at different times of year, although she did answer questions Rick could have answered. I think she fell a bit short if she was also supposed to be a spotter. I would have liked to see her peering out the windows all the time, while talking.
