Okay, this trip is fairly pricey. But it is totally worth it.

Michael Allen is Whistler's bear man, he has been watching the bears for 20 years and knows where they like to hang out. We saw 8 different bears including 2 cubs on our trip.

It's surprising how close you can get to them. Michael obviously knows not to scare them, but the bears are just like 'okay, its you again, with some tourists'.

You can see bears around Whistler and on the edge of the road from Vancouver fairly frequently, but nothing beats seeing them high up on Whistler or Blackcomb Mountains.

Michael will say he is not an expert on bears, but all he means is that he has no official qualification. He knows absolutely loads about them.

The pic below was taken our trip, I've got loads just as good as this one.

If you go to Whistler and don't do this trip then you'll regret it

If you want to see black bears and get some good photos, this is your tour. The guide, Mike, knows them all and where to find them. We saw 10, including two adorable cubs playing near their mother and two "courting" pairs. We also saw a couple of black tailed deer. Every thing ran right on time exactly as expected.

If you're interested in bears and local wildlife, the tour is fascinating.

The tour guide, Mike, has been researching the black bears around Whistler for many years and knows them all by name. He provides a great commentary on the various bears and their life stories as he drives you around the sloping terrain searching for photo opportunities.

At $220 a ticket, it isn't cheap, but it is the best way to see the local bears (safely) and learn more about them.

You also need to be aware that seeing the bears depends on whether the bears want to be seen. I went on the 6 PM excursion and saw half a dozen. It is luck of the draw how many great photo and viewing opportunities you will have. I understand the afternoon/evening one I ventured out on is one of the better times to see the bears.

Even though Mike will do all he can to find you some bears to view, keep in mind you're dealing with wild animals who have minds of their own!

We booked the 3 hour tour months in advance paying in full. We chose the 7 am tour because we had other excursions booked later in the day. The trip requires you to be there 15 minutes before departure which is fair enough. Since we were uncertain of exactly where to meet we were actually at the meet point by 6.30. At 7.15 am no one had turned up so we left an answer phone message on the contact number we had. We waited until 7.30 and no one showed up so we sadly returned to our hotel. Whistler tourism were excellent and phoned us back as soon as they got our message. They contacted the tour operator and apparently they could not get hold of the person who was meant to be driving the tour. They refunded our money in full but we lost out by about £20 because of the change in currency rates since we booked and the currency transfer fee charged by our card company. This i can accept, but what i find irksome is not hearing from the operator to simply apologise. Their no show caused us a wasted morning and meant we were unable to take a tour we had very much looked forward to.

What a way to spend 3 hours of your life. Michael Allen know these bears inside out. Up to 7 adults are taken by Michael in a 4x4 vehicle up whistler mountain to find the bears. We were lucky enough to see 8 bears in total. Closest we got to a bear was approx 10 feet. this is the way to watch bears with an expert and in their natural environment. Some people will see the price $189 per adult and think oats expensive but having done this trip twice it is money well spent. We can not recommend this trip high enough
