I’m a confirmed mid week skier, but all that fresh snow beckoned this past weekend. How to enjoy it without fighting the crowds? Sign up for an Extremely Canadian Steeps Clinic.
I registered & signed the waiver in advance at one of several WB ski school location. Some participants obviously decided to sign up after hearing the snow report & arrived at the designated meeting point just prior to the start time. The group loaded the Whistler gondola and headed off for a mass warm up run with the instructors. This was followed by a “separator” run that placed participants of similar ability with an instructor. The clinic is geared for advanced intermediate to expert skiers and our coach, Crystal Lee, said that if a client’s skiing ability isn’t appropriate X-Can’s timing is such that the client can be seamlessly transferred to a ski school super group.
The groups are small – we were 3 and with lift line priority we racked up a lot of vertical over the 2 days. Crystal is a personable young woman with an infectious enthusiasm – she loves powder......and skiing it!! She blends humour, encouragement; knowledge; and advice with instruction and kept us moving around the slopes. Typically the first day is spent on Whistler and the second day on Blackcomb, but high winds had closed the alpine so we rode the P2P after lunch in quest of powder. Crystal was an expert at ferreting out appropriate terrain to ski given the weather and took me to new areas I hope I can find again! Unfortunately I had to cut the après short due to a prior commitment, but had time to decompress over a quick beer and some nachos at Merlin’s. I left with a new ski buddy to phone; an Extremely Canadian t- shirt; and tired legs.
