“Very Accomodating”
Reviewed June 24, 2010

This was my first business trip to Whistler and I choose the Listel for it's central location and the fact that it was not on the main road, yet central enough to walk to my appointments.

My request for an early check in was not an issue and the room rate was the best buy in Whistler at the time.

The room was very clean and functional, beds and bedding were comfortable and in excellent condition, made for a good nights sleep!

The staff were terrific, friendly and courteous, they offered to help with my luggage, assisted with directions and restaurants. They were always eager to help.

I would definitely stay here again!!!!

You can't really fault this hotel in terms of its location, centrally located in the Village and within 3 minutes walk to the Ski lifts/gondolas. You can't really expect much from a 3 star hotel (with 4 star and above prices - its expensive at Whistler), room was reasonably sized (twin beds which are queen sized). Basic and certainly not luxurious. If you are expecting a nice view from the room overlooking the mountains or the village, you can just ........ FORGET ABOUT IT. My room was on the ground floor and it overlooks the road/drop off area. If you are thinking of a romantic evening in the room with your partner, you better draw your curtains :-( cos you are not only getting an awful view, you'll not get any privacy at all!

In terms of cleanliness - its acceptable, furnishing was a bit drab but decently maintained. Checking in was ok. Service was ok (didn't really make any requests out of the ordinary - nothing extraordinary or even exciting happened). In short, its a hotel without a "wow" factor and certainly not memorable - basically, a no frills hotel.

The following unhygienic conditions were observed in the kitchen of the Bear Foot Bistro restaurant during breakfast:

· Staff did not wear head protection when preparing food

· Non- kitchen staff were walking through kitchen wearing outdoor clothes

· There was an infestation of fruit flies around the breakfast juice and prepared fruit

· The serving staff were eating food in the kitchen

· One waitress was observed eating from a guest plate before serving it to the guest

· Food debris was still on kitchen floor from the previous evening

· Kitchen utensils were stored on the kitchen floor

· Bread products for continental breakfast were still frozen at breakfast time

· The kitchen staff replenished the pastries stand by hand even though tongs were available

· Guests with breakfast vouchers were treated like an inconvenient as to paying guests.

One of the reasons we picked the Listel for our holiday was because of the reputation of the Bear Foot Bistro, but based on the above experiences, we did not eat there apart from at breakfast time. When we brought all these facts to the attention of one the restaurant managers (Oli), there was an air of indifference on his part, he couldn't even comprehend the unhygienic conditions in the bistro restaurant but he did promise to pass on our concerns to the Head Chef and arrange a meeting with her for us. Nothing more happened and we had to leave Whistler without receiving any satisfactory response, or even an apology

To make matters even worse, we also experienced theft at the Listel Whistler. An alarm clock was stolen from room 115 and $CAD 200 in cash was stolen from room 116. When we returned home on 18th March 2010, two members of our party, whose credit cards were scanned at the reception desk upon arrival, discovered that their cards had been cloned and used in fraudulent transactions amounting to substantial amounts of Canadian and American Dollars while we were holidaying in Whistler. The cards have had to be cancelled and we have had to suffer the inconvenience of waiting on replacements. This is an appalling set of circumstances and is totally and utterly unacceptable to us.
So what do I think of the hotel staff.......I will leave that up to you, Don't stay at this hotel unless you want grief

This guest was traveling with the gentleman who wrote the next comment on this site (Don't stay here or you'll be robbed). I don't really know where to begin with these folks, to date they've contacted the RCMP and tried to open a criminal investigation, they've inundated the Provincial Health Authority with emailed allegations, they've posted two extremely negative comments on TripAdvisor, they've bitterly complained through their travel agent and they've contact the hotel's staff so often with demeaning and derogatory emailed messages that I've instructed the staff to no longer respond.

The Whistler detachment of the RCMP was contacted by them and conducted a preliminary investigation. They interrogated the electronic locks, reviewed video footage and interviewed staff and (I assume) the guests themselves but found no credible evidence to go further.

The provincial health authority was contacted repeatedly by them. Although the restaurant has a very good reputation and an enviable rating from the health authority (like all restaurants in BC ours is inspected twice each year). Following the recent inspection which was conducted based on these allegations; the kitchen yet again received the top rating given for inspections of commercial kitchens in BC. Hazard Rating: Low.

This is now the second TripAdvisor comment left by them - they waited until the initial comment was responded to and then posted this one. At the same time they sent a letter of complaint to their travel agent (usually that's the best place to begin if a problem develops on a trip... real or perceived).

The worst part of this situation however, is their treatment of our staff, and from what I can tell, just about everyone else that they've come in contact with. They been condescending, mean-spirited and generally hurtful in their dealings.

Not often, but occasionally I come across people who should simply not travel. Maybe it’s the stress of being away from home, or possibly a sense of entitlement or even I wonder a sense of disappointment... based on price they've chosen to book at a mid-level hotel, but expect the services and amenities of a five star resort. I can't explain the "drivers" for these people, but I can say without doubt that they shouldn't be traveling the world and subjecting their negative energy on others.

We stayed at this hotel as part of a Crystal Ski holiday this March for 10 days. At first it seemed fine - apart from the fact that the toilet overflowed and breakfast was only available for 4 out of 5 of us.... (even though we paid supplements for under-occupancy on each room...) Then there was the situation in the open-plan kitchen/dining room where (a) none of the staff wore protective clothing, (b) there was a fruit fly infestation and (c) one waitress swanned around the dining room and kitchen talking on her mobile phone during service. Worst of all was the fact that cash was stolen out of one of our rooms and two credit cards, required by Reception as "security" upon our arrival, were scanned and used fraudulently several times in both Canada and the US completely unknownst to us until we got back......... so the nightmare of Listel Whistler continues. Don't stay in this hotel - you will be robbed.

JimMockford, General Manager at The Listel Hotel Whistler, responded to this review, April 12, 2010
In my capacity as General Manager of two different hotels, I have written countless responses to guest comments and general feedback, mostly positive but occasionally negative. In most cases the information in the comment is true or at the very least is based on some truth... in the case of the attached comment, it is a complete fabrication, it simply didn't happen. The guest made an allegation that $200.00 was missing from their teenagers wallet. The RCMP (local police) were asked to investigate. After reviewing video tape and auditing the hotel room door lock they could find no evidence that a crime had taken place or that the room had been entered by a criminal. They were curious as to why a wallet had been left in the room unattended when the room is equipped with a complimentary in-room safe.

The other comments with regards to service throughout the hotel:

- The party paid for 4 breakfasts through their tour company, breakfast was most certainly available to the 5th traveller but at their expense not the tour company's.

- The kitchen staff is alway professionally uniformed.

- There may have been some fruit flies around the fruit, it does happen on occasion in any restaurant (they generally come in on the fruit itself, which is brought in fresh daily).

- Our breakfast restaurant manager does take reservations for evening service. For efficiencies sake she does carry a portable phone with her for that purpose.

Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms BUT the sheets did not fit the bed and we ended up sleeping directly on the mattress...EWWW!!!! and first thing in the morning the cleaning staff made so much noise that it was very disturbing.Being a travel agent myself I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and even after sending two emails I have had no replys.

we stayed 2 nights in this hotel. Thought the room was spacious, clean and functional. We really appreciated the free internet access in the lobby. I would stay there again if passing by Whistler.

Very big room. Nice bathroom. Very close to the Village and the gondolas (5 minutes walking). Haven't try the restaurant for dinner (too expensive) just for the breakfast and it was not very good.
