“Great location, great skiing service!”
Reviewed March 9, 2008

Our friends used Starwood points to book a room at the Westin and as it had a pull-out couch in a separate room, they kindly invited us to come. The room was definitely comfortable enough for 4 people. It was very very cozy with a fireplace, nice view of the mountains, a mini-kitchenette (enough to make breakfast!) and nice bathroom. The location is superb...1 minute to the slope and right in the heart of the village with all the bars & restaurants...yet not so close so that you don't get any of the noise! The best part was the skiing service. the hotel has a ski rental shop. It took us 10 minutes in the morning to rent skis. And after skiing, they have a 'ski drop off' place right at the bottom of the slope....so easy! You can go right to apres ski without having to bother with unloading your gear!!!
Whistler is a super fun, laid-back town. HIghly recommend it to all.

We asked for a pickup from the Westin Shuttle we called and they could not pick us up saying it was booked, this was at 10:45pm They called for a taxi and it never came. We had to walk 25 minutes back to the hotel. They never told us we had to reserve the Westin Shuttle. I was also billed twice for internet service and after 30 minutes of being on hold with internet company and then the front desk of Westin nothing was ever credited after they said it was going to be. We tried checking in as well and the room was not ready when we entered. They say guaranteed 4pm check in, not so. Scum in the showers is gross and both hot tubs were out of service. Nothing like being on a ski vacation and not having a hot tub. They fixed them and then water was luke warm. We stay here 15 dyas to 30 days a year and I have reached my breaking point. Service is sub-par, understaffed and the only way they can charge what they charge is the location. Do yourself a favor stay at the Pan Pacific or Four Seasons.

The hotel is in a fantastic location (right by the slopes) and overall has good facilities/rooms (I think they plan to redecorate next year).

However, as said by a few other reviewers, there are a lot of hidden charges (e.g. $20 a day for gym; more for valet parking) so expect to pay a lot more than the room rate. The service is also quite hit and miss - bell boys are great, but concierge often forgot to call back, and the front desk can be quite frosty (didn't have our room ready on time, and rather than apologise just told us to sit in the reception for an hour and a half...)

If you're looking to pay these sorts of prices, the Four Seasons is to a higher standard - rooms and service (although further from the slopes)

Big hotels are not my thing. However the Westin managed to offer a pretty good service given that it's a very large property.

Some of the highlights:

-> CONCIERGE SERVICE WAS AMAZING !!! They helped me to get reservations, buy lift tickets, book lessons, transfer to airport, etc.... They even sent me a note 2 weeks before I arrived, asking if they could be of any help.

-> Breakfast / Breakfast area: very nice breakfast with lots of stuff, and pretty fancy foods (smoked salmon, etc..). The breakfast area is their main restaurant and very well staffed, with good linnen, silverware, etc.

-> Room: given that our room was not ready by 4pm (their normal guaranteed check-in time), we got an upgrade to a room with forest view and with a separate living room. It was really spacious, comfortable, with a kitchen, fridge, fireplace, etc... Very cosy, charming and overall nice. Good bed, good sheets, towels, bathroom...

-> SPA: AMAZING massages and treatments. Horrible price (waaaaay too expensive)

-> Hot Tub + Pool. They have 2 small hot-tubs. One indoor and another outside. They are both very small for the hotel. It's really crowded. I could never get a spot on the one outside. The swimming pool (half indoors/half outdoors) on the other hand, was really spacious.

-> LOCATION: The hotel is literally steps away from the main gondola, and for that matter from everything else in the town (you could not get a better location).

-> SKI CONCIERGE. You can drop your skis by the concierge right as you step off the mountain. In the morning you pick them up at the hotel.

-> Laundry. They have a $4 /load laundry washer / dryer. Pretty handy for those who don't carry too much clothes.

** I did not understand the complaints from other reviewers that you have to pay a lot of extras... I did not have that impression at all. It was like any other hotel I've been to....

*** Good overall experience. I would stay there again, but prefer a smaller, more personalized hotel. For those of you who don't mind big, this is an excellent choice in Whistler.

I stayed at the Westin with my husband, hoping for a luxurious ten night ski break, and we had a brilliant time.

I was initially apprehensive about all the reviews talking about hidden extras and the expensive resort fee. We booked through a company who specialise in tailor made ski holidays, and got what we thought was a great price, and it included ALL taxes and fees.

I wouldn't say the Westin is a five star, but definitely a very high quality four star.

The entrance and lobby are gorgeous - definitely one of those hotels you see other people being dropped off at and wish it was yours.

Staff were very friendly and welcoming in all areas of the hotel.

We stayed in a junior suite on the ninth floor, with a mountain view. I believe this is the smallest of the rooms, but it more than met our needs: modern decoration, comfy bed, nice bathroom with great shower and super deep "soaker tub", sofa (bed), tv, fireplace, fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher, cooker, toaster and plentiful kitchen utensils. There was also a safe, bath robes and slippers, daily coffee for the percolator, newspaper, and free local phone calls.

Nothing in Whistler village is that far away from anything else, but the Westin is two minutes walk from the ski lifts. It's almost embarassing to hand your skis to the ski valet at the bottom of the slope for them to take them back to the hotel!

I'm surprised the Westin is only rated 17 in these reviews. True, it isn't as luxurious as the Four Seasons, but it is very high standard and is more conveniently located for skiing and bars/restaurants. The Westin also covers the majority of the good points mentioned in the other, higher-rated hotels.

We found restaurants to often be very busy with around a 40 minute wait. Our tip is to pick a restaurant a night ahead, and use your free in-room local calls to make reservations.

Our family of 4 stayed at the Westin Jan. 1-7th. Because we used our Starwood points the cost was not a factor and the additional $20 per day for use of the gym, internet etc. did not seem out of the ordinary as Westin in other cities normally charge an additional fee for these services. We did not have a car and one really is not needed as everything in the Village is within walking distance. Prior to arriving, I was sent an e-mail to upgrade our room for an additional $50. When I asked about the upgrade at check-in they said that they did not have an upgraded room for our entire stay but after checking with the manager, offered us two adjoining rooms for an additional $100.

The two rooms were in the East tower (rooms 305 & 306) (slope side with views of the Whistler gondola and the mountain). The first room had a nice kitchen (all sub-zero appliances), eating area adjacent to the living room which had its own television and fireplace and pull-out queen sofa bed, plenty of linens, pillows, towels and closet space. There was a huge bathroom (granite and tile) and a separate bedroom (queen bed) with its own closet and television. The second room also had its own large bathroom and was pretty much just a really nice bedroom (queen bed) with television armoire work space and closet. Everything was clean, comfortable and the maid service was always there at the same time every day.

The kitchen was great because you could buy groceries and cook breakfast in the morning then get out to the slopes early. All dishes, utensils, towels, pans and even dishwasher soap is provided.

There are only a few hotels that are literally steps from the lifts (Pan Pacific, Sundial Boutique, Crystal Lodge and the Westin) within Skiers Plaza. The best thing about its location is the Solomon Ski shop and the ski valet on the first floor. You can rent everything there, pick it up every morning and at the end of the day, the Westin had a tent in the middle of Skiers Plaza where you just dropped off your skis (or board) and they would store it for you each night (no hauling your equipment to your room).

The gym looked out on the outdoor pool and Jacuzzi (the pool extended through a wall and became an indoor pool as well and there was an indoor jacuzzi and sauna also).

We only ate at the Aubergine Grill within the hotel and it was only for breakfast. Not cheap but excellent variety and service. There are too many other options in the village for food and all within walking distance.

Everyone was polite, helpful and eager to help. I am surprised to hear some of the complaints of others.

Prior to arrival the concierge contacted me via e-mail and arranged for lift tickets, rentals etc. so that all was taken care of well ahead of time. They sent me a list of activities, prices for skiing and lists of restaurants. They can make reservations ahead of time for you as some places fill up - especially on week ends.

If you are going to Whistler to ski, the Westin is an excellent choice.

I stayed her for a couple of nights in December and overall the hotel is good, in a great location (close to the slopes). However its not worth paying full price if you can avoid it.

I had received a mistake billing on my meal, I was supposed to receive a discount, although I had let the room service know ahead of time. However when i received my bill it was fully priced. I emailed the hotel to let them know about the mistake and was told "when the bill was slipped under your door you would have had the opportunity to review it and discuss it with the front desk agents prior to you departing the hotel. At this point in time I can not go back and make the adjustment."

So just be carefull that you review EVERYTHING before signing anything so you can avoid this.

PROS: good location
CONS: hotel is tired the carpet in the hallways and elevator are dirty and in need of a desperate upgrade. BAD SERVICE
