Shhh.... don't tell the Mrs. but I like beer. I like beer a lot, with a preference for ambers, maybe, but I'm pretty multi-cultural when it comes to a pint or two.

The Farthing is a faux English pub. Wood and brass and beer and people and green and rugby stuff on the walls. The beer is cold, the service very nice for the most part. The bar-keeps are all pretty good as are most of the waitresses. The beer is cold. The beer is good.

The food, though, isn't. Some stuff is OK, most is bland or boring or incredibly mediocre. We don't eat there anymore. Not worth it. The beer, however, is cold. The beer, moreover, is good.

Stop by the Farthing for a pint or two. It's a lovely spot in Oak Bay. Yeah, it's a bit pricey so you might want to check the price on some of those ooh-la-la, fancy beers and certainly on those lovely smelling, though awful-tasting, scotches.

Visit soon. Visit often. Just eat somewhere else.

The Penny Farthing provides reliably tasty food and excellent local craft beers in an attractive environment--not faux-Brit twee despite the "olde" bit. The salmon is always perfectly cooked, the burgers are satisfying, and the yam fries are splendid. Service is usually prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable. One caveat: avoid the up-market "artisan" ploughman's lunch. It bears little resemblance to the English-pub standard, having too little cheese and overwhelming the palate with mounds of olives, tapenade, and relishes. Other than that one fizzle, I've never regretted ordering their more adventurous offerings.

Although we were there during an off period (2-4pm), the Penny Farthing certainly achieved the friendly pub atmosphere one looks for in establishments such as this. The food was good (love the yam fries) and the service above average. Food portions are plentiful and well prepared (though the soup was a bit thick for our taste). The chicken club wrap is very tasty and HUGE!

The four of us all had the seafood chowder and enjoyed every morsel. The side of bread complimented our lunch and with a fine ale, we were well on our way to an afternoon of sightseeing. The service was top-notch and our waitress cheerful and friendly. We were made most welcome.

Food was all right, service was terrible. When we wanted to order another round, the server slammed our bill on the table, and when we went to pay with a gift card that was given to us, we were told that it was not activated. The "manager" informed us that there was nothing they could do to check it or to remedy the problem. When we got home, we check the balance on the card on their website only to find that there was, in fact, money on the card and it had been activated. The food was good, but it wasn't worth the headache that it caused. With so many other restaurants in town that provide excellent food with excellent service, our recommendation is to spend your money there!
