What a disaster my lunch order was!!

After a lengthy ponder of the menu, ordered the Tofu Lettuce Wraps but was told 20 minutes in, "oh, sorry, forgot to say, none left" so made a quicky decision to opt for the Beet Salad. Based this upon other lovely beet salads other diners were enjoying.

It was meant to be a full-meal sized salad but arrived pathetically scant and visually unworthy of the Rebar's reputation; on a small plate, very poor value for money. It amounted to about 1 cup of finely chopped greens, fully wilted down onto the plate with far too much dressing; aside from that, consisted of about a teaspoon of what looked like pre-chewed beets on the plate's edge(disgusting), and about a teaspoon of untidy goat's cheese, also on the edge of the mass of unappetizing greens. Nothing remotely similar to the other fabulous piles on lovely large plates.

Expensive and inedible.

Ate none of it. The server packed it up; I took it for the seagulls.

When I explained my disappointment to the server, explaining to her that another diner sitting nearby had a beet salad, that was practically a work of art and twice the size of mine, the server said "oh that's the other, the house salad, and it's not organic"....so, I wonder, is the moral of the story at Rebar: if you want an appetizing meal don't order organic? This explanation was an insult.

For shame Rebar! Why call an absolutely inedible pile of old looking chopped greens organic with less than a mouthful of beets and even less of goat cheese an excuse for an expensive full meal-size salad? Disgraceful.

Popular venue, and rightly so. Dropped in for lunch and joined a short queue, which was handled competently and politely. Inventive menu using flavours which worked very well. Although busy, service was good. Definitely recommended.

This is an attractive little restaurant in Bastion Square near the inner harbour.
I had the best tuna melt here. It was toasted, warm, the cheese complimented it and it had a really tasty relish component. The salad on the side was really good and the sesame soy dressing was so good too. I never thought I would be writing a review about how good a tuna sandwich was.
My husband ordered the almond burger and he thought it was really good too.
Two days later we were trying to eat breakfast in a downtown restaurant and after waiting in line at Jam Cafe at the opening at 8am and just missing getting a table, then moving on to Blue Fox which was also full, we ended up at Rebar again.
They were just opening for breakfast at 8:30 and we got a table without waiting. My husband had a really good stack of lemon blueberry pancakes and an awesome smoothie. I had a stellar almond milk latte but my omelette was just average. The spinach, mushrooms and cheese were kind of an after thought as they were just wedged in the middle of the egg and the cheese hadn't melted at all and the spinach was cold.
As almost everything we ate here was really tasty and of high quality; we will definitely eat here again when we are in Victoria.

Rebar is well worth a visit. The decor is cozy, warm and playful. The atmosphere is lively and the menu is varied. The Monk's Curry is one of the better Thai green curries to be had in VIctoria and the offerings on the menu range from pot stickers, salads, a hearty miso soup, quesadillas and stir fries to burgers and pasta. There is a fresh juice bar and the best vegan brownies in town. There is a number of vegetarian and pescetarian selections, however vegan options are more limited.

We were looking for something different that a vegetarian and seafood lover might enjoy. We read the reviews and decided to try Rebar. We were a little older than the typical diners that evening but really enjoyed the ambiance and delightful staff. My wife had the Mt. Fuji stir fry and I had the stir fry with salmon. Both were excellent and enjoyable. This is a super casual place and a short walk from downtown. A fun place.
