“Amazing Fish & Chips”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 11, 2014

We used to visit Old Vic's but the last few years we hadn't enjoyed it as much. When we asked a friend who worked at our timeshare the recommendation was Haultains! And boy they didn't disappoint! We tried both Cod and Halibut and each was EXCELLENT. Sadly we found this place on our last day in town. We WILL eat again! It's a laid back atmosphere with a home-town feel; we got the impression it's a favorite among the locals in the neighborhood as many were welcomed by name. You won't be disappointed

“Visitors, this is worth the drive!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 28, 2013

We wanted to head out of the DT Tourist area and were told that this was the place for fish and chips. It was a little bit more of a drive than we thought and when you get there, it's is a very odd little spot in a residential neighborhood. We sat in the car debating whether or not to actually go in. I am so glad we did! It's definately a little hole in the wall place when you see it and pretty rustic on the inside. Don't be fooled by this! We ordered some fried zucchini sticks and Hard Apple ciders while deciding on dinner. They were lightly breaded and very good in the dill sauce. The Ciders were delicious! I wish I could remember the maker. We ordered cods and halibut for dinner. The coleslaw was good and didn't soak the chips or fish. And the fish was AWESOME! More fish than breading!! Big portions too! They must also have great milkshakes there because we saw that most of the other patrons ordered them. On the way out when packing up the car to leave a local saw we were from out of town and asked us how dinner was we told him it was great. He was so happy to hear it and told us he had been coming since he was young and that this place was a local fave. And that they cut their own fish themselves. We will be back!

“Too much good food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 16, 2013

We started going her 20+ years ago on trips up from Portland. Out of the way, so only tourists who do a little research will be there, along with locals. Hand-cut fish, hot and surprisingly not greasy. My wife and 1 usually order cod and halibut 1-piece dinners and share. Halibut is great, but I think the cod may be even better!

“Fantastic Fish and Chips”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 30, 2013

What a great place! Very old school, the place is around 80 years old. Boy do they do fish and chips right. I had the two piece cod and my wife had the two piece Halibut. They hand cut there fish and cut there own fries. We started with the Calamari and it was on of the best I have had in a long time. Tina our server was very helpful and fun.

Mary the owner is in her 80's and is a blast. She takes such pride in her restaurant and the quality of the food they serve. Only eight table so go early. We were there at about 2 so it was easy to get a table. The fish is so light and fresh, the coleslaw is very nice and home made. The fries are home made, ask for them over done makes a big difference.

Wont hesitate to go back if you love fish and chips this is the place.

“Best British style in town”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2013

We love Haultain... you feel like you're part of the family here! If you crave fish and chips like you had in England, coming here is worth leaving the beaten path. It is a small shop (can get very hot - I don't know how they work there!), but very efficient and you generally don't have to wait long (but beware, this is a much loved place!). Their simple batter is not too thick, not too thin, and the chips are chips. Nice slaw, albeit a bit mayonnaisey at times. And they always carry Hermanns Dark, which goes oh so well with the meal. Not much other than perogies for non-fish, non-deep fry eaters, but they're good too. Great slice of local Victoria.
