I was lucky enough to head out at 2:30pm on the 19th of October. It was an overcast and pretty grey looking day so I was a little bit concerned about visibility and the amount of active wildlife. I really shouldn't have been concerned and I still remember the excitement that I felt upon seeing the 'humpback whales spotted today' sign at the front desk.
We arrived at 2pm and hit the water at probably 2:40. The crew were very clear with directions and made sure that we were properly prepared for the freezing cold. We were given pants, gloves, sunglasses and a jacket to use, which was really helpful. There were also blankets available on the boat, which by the end of the trip I had to use.
Once heading out, we narrowed in on a few humpbacks, that showed off their tails to us constantly. Our driver, Jeff, seemed really experienced and was able to predict the path of the whales and get us in close each time they came to the surface. It was also nice to see the tour companies working together to make sure that the maximum amount of wildlife was seen.
After our first few humpbacks, we headed over to another group, before speeding off to the lighthouse to see the seals. All the while, we were given some great information about each animal we saw and brought in close to get some great snaps. After heading over to Secretary Island and seeing some eagles, we headed back to shore.
Initially, both myself and my auntie were a bit concerned about how much time we would actually get out on the water. We not only had heaps of time but actually more than expected, as we arrived back at about 6:20. It was really great for the company to have hot chocolates waiting for us to sip on before leaving.
Overall, I was thrilled with this experience! As this was a gift for my auntie, I was so happy to have everything go so well. Both her and I have promised to do this again if we are ever in Victoria as it was a brilliant experience!
