We chose to go whale Watching with Eagle Wing based on the great reviews posted on Trip Advisor and having travelled all the way from Australia we were really excited about the possibility of seeing some whales, especially Orcas. But unfortunately what we expected to be the highlight of our trip became the opposite. We had perfect weather and the trip started out great, we saw lots of sea lions, a humpback mother and calf and a bald eagle but alas no Orcas which is what we were really hoping to see. We would not recommend being seated at the rear of this boat. It was difficult to hear what the Captain and his assistant were saying and our trip was totally spoiled when one passenger sitting in front of us was seasick and threw up over the side of the boat whilst we were underway and we got covered in vomit. The seating design meant this really couldn't be avoided and we then spent the rest of the trip standing as we did not want to return to our seats in case it happened again. It was a shame they did not make the sick bags they had on board available at the outset or perhaps they seat passengers who are feeling unwell at the rear to avoid a repeat of this event. We will return to Victoria in the future to hopefully spy an Orca but will unfortunately be choosing another tour operator based on our experience.

Firstly, I wish to extend a heartfelt thank you for choosing Eagle Wing and we want to assure you and others that read this review and rely on Trip Advisor that we and all whale watching operators do our best to offer visitors to Victoria the best and most comfortable experience possible. I would also like to refer people to the review immediately after this one, which coincidentally is from a passenger from the same tour. This will offer to the reader another guests point of view.....“Truly a class act!”..... “We were particularly impressed with how well prepared they were, helping a few people who unfortunately got sick, and how safety conscious they were”.

On the day you were out, we made every effort to find the Orcas, even after the amazing humpback show, but they were unfortunately not in the vicinity. We did have a great day both weather-wise, flat waters with a slow moving large swell-& sunny skies, and spending time with the humpback whales and many other creatures you kindly made mention of: Humpback whales, porpoise, seals, sea lions, eagles, etc.

Naturally, having someone get sick and spoil your adventure is not what anyone wants or would expect. I can assure you that we have reviewed this incident with our Captain (Jeff) and crew (Lana- who also is a full time Paramedic) who were on board that day and both feel that they would not have been able to prevent this rare situation from occurring. Both Jeff & Lana immediately attended to the needs of passengers: washing down the boat & the people, handing out bags and ginger candies.

During the course of a summer it is not common to have sea sick passengers. We do carry sick bags, but cannot place them out for each passenger on the seats as they would fly off the boat (have tried in the past) and create an environmental issue of littering the ocean—this does not sit well with our sustainable mandate. We rely on & do offer guests, who tell us they are not feeling well during a tour, either sea sickness bags or ginger candies which usually calms the stomach.

Traveling in an open boat such as Goldwing, the vessel you were on, is generally a much better option for those who are prone to motion sickness compared to a large covered vessel—your center of gravity is much closer to the water which minimizes that rolling sensation that you do experience with larger vessels. With respect to the seating arrangement, that is something that is entirely up to the passengers and if someone wanted to move forward, our Captains do their best to accommodate.

As I understand Jeff and Lana on board made every effort to help clean, make comfortable, and address all customer discomfort during the trip. This was a difficult and unusual situation that needed to be addressed whilst still making headway back to Victoria—as we were a long ways from our home port due to the efforts made to find the whales.

Thank you again for your comments and your patronage. We very much are looking forward to having the pleasure of your company again in the future but perhaps under more typical circumstances.

Both Jeff and Lana say a big hello!

Eagle Wing is the top rated whale watching company in Victoria and we hope you will consider us again as so many of the folks that reply on trip Advisor do.

Cheers,
Brett Soberg Co-owner/operator

This company worked really hard to make sure that we saw not only whales, but seals, sea lions, eagles, and other wildlife. The tour operators were obviously concerned about the whales, which is important to me. They maintained a distance from the whales, and turned off the engines when the whales were near. Having the fastest boats made it so that the drivers could get ahead of the whales, turn off those engines, and it makes for great photos when the whales are coming straight at you! We were able to move around the boat to get good views, which is something you can't do in a zodiac boat. Having a biologist on board makes a huge difference, as you are able to understand the animals, their behaviours and interactions with the environment. And those fast boats? So fun!!
When I was there I saw the operators work hard to find an older couple a different company that would have a larger tour boat as the couple didn't want a smaller boat. These guys took time out to call around to different companies and book this couple with another tour company. They could have easily just said no to this couple, but they put in that extra work for them. I think that says a lot about a company. They sure did put in the extra work on my tours (I did two with them), and it was worth it. Go with this company, it's worth a little more.

Thank you very much Tracy for your kind words. The team at Eagle Wing takes great pride in our ability to give our guests the trip they were expecting. Both our Captains and our on-board Naturalists are passionate about what they do and try to give each and every person a full and proper description of the Salish Sea and all the creature that live on, under and around us.

The trip was wonderful and fun. We saw about 15 -20 orcas swimming. The closest we got was about 20ft from an orca as it swam by. There were also baby orcas to see. The boat went so fast that it was fun to ride and part of the adventure. Bring snacks and water. It was 4 hr boat ride and the kids got hungry. It got very cold, but the company provided jackets, pants, gloves, hats and blankets. But you should still wear warm shoes and a fleeces underneath. This tour also provided a chance to see seals on a small island. We also go to see eagles. My kids loved it.

Thank you for your positive review and yes it does get cold on the open water and we agree, please dress warmly and we will supply all the extra over gear to keep you as comfortable as possible. Families, especially children, do enjoy the thrill of our fast, open boats, all with bathroom facilities and lots of dry storage so as stated, bring food and drink if you want as our trips are longer than our competitors because we will take more time to not only find whales but see as many of the other water, air and land critters as possible. Thanks again for choosing Eagle Wing and we hope to see you and your family in Victoria again soon.

We had a truly amazing tour on the 26 passenger ( larger of the 2) boat - we sat near the front so were protected a bit from the wind, although the day was clear and relatively warm. We followed a pod of killer whales, 20+, for over an hour as they traveled to San Juan Island to feed. They were so beautiful and were the highlight of our four hour ride. We also saw humpback whales, bald eagles, and sea lions. A great trip - thanks!

We chose the Eagle Wing whale watching tour company having seen that they're #1 on trip advisor. Since trip advisor is the word-of-mouth of the 21st century, we knew we'd be getting our money's worth. And we most certainly did!
Jeff (the lead Captain) and the rest of the EW team are knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and best of all, they will do whatever it takes to give you a once-in-a-lifetime experience. On our trip, September 1st, 2012, we watched a pod of transient Orca/Killer whales (T30 and her family) hunt and ultimately kill a harbour porpoise. It was the most incredible thing we'd ever seen! On the same trip we also saw harbour seals, cormorants, and the beautiful Victoria coastline.

We will always go with Eagle Wing for all our future whale watching tours because they're passionate about ecotourism and conservation (they're even carbon-neutral!), and they far outstrip their competition-- they have a farther range, and they work harder to give you the best experience they can.

WOW, You are very kind and YES, Trip Advisor is king when visitors plan their trips which is why Jeff and all the staff at Eagle Wing make the extra effort at every opportunity to ensure our guests have the experience they were seeking and at the same time give us the opportunity to not only promote Victoria and the wondrous Salish Sea but to also inform our valued guests about the opportunities to help protect and sustain the creatures of the sea, especially the Orcas. Not only are we carbon-neutral but Eagle Wing is proud to be a member of 1% for the Planet deepening our commitment to supporting conservation in wild places. Thank you again.
