“Great Hotel”
Reviewed July 19, 2010

Booked via hotels.com with very little research, what a result. Perfect location on a quiet side street 1 minutes walk from the harbour area in Victoria. Good size room and bathroom with an amazingly well equipped kitchen. Paid £300 for 3 nights which comparied to lot of other places we stayed in Canada was great value for the money.

We stayed two nights as part of a BC Ferries package (Quick aside...HIGHLY recommend the BC Ferries package. 2 nights with hotel parking, two ferry trips, and whale watching in a single package saved money and LOTS of worry...now we return you to your regularly scheduled review).

The hotel is perfectly situated a block or so from the inner harbor area which is the center of the tourist action In Victoria: an easy walk to Parliament, BC Museum, The Empress, and on to the downtown district of restaurants, shops, clubs, etc. There's even live performers and art sales along the harbor, but I digress again.

Yes, the room was smallish, but complete with kitchenette, french press coffee, balcony, internet, etc. We were more than a little worried about the Murphy bed, but it was very comfortable for us. I think our room was the smallest floorplan with a balcony; the view looked out toward the harbor. It was partially obstructed by other buildings, but we could see float planes landing and the mountains in the distance, so all was good.

The bathroom had both a tub and stand-up shower, which was a pleasant surprise. The walls were a bit thin with doors opening and closing, but not any more than most other hotels, and never a problem after hours. The staff was courteous and professional. There are even complimentary apples and gourmet teas and coffees.

We can't say enough about the location (and the BC Ferries package); our stay was perfect and far exceeded our expectations. We wholehearted recommend the Oswego and will be back for our next trip to Victoria.

Great location, close to everything, no need for a car. Front desk staff was very friendly and helpful, they know their city. I really love the condo style hotels, even if the rooms are not large, the layout gives you a feeling of space. The balcony was a nice touch. I liked the decor, modern and practical. I would love to give a 5 star but breakfast was disapointing, we didn't eat at the hotel so can't say much else about the food.

The beds are cheap foutons that are extremely uncomfortable. The room service does not come and clean your room every day. They won't even give you more soap! You would think that 200 a night they would clean your room. The food is terrible. The menu is very limited. The food that they do offer isn't edable. Honesty spend your money somewhere else! This hotel isn't worth it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On behalf of the hotel we are sorry that the Oswego hotel did not meet your expectations. We of course, take all your comments very seriously. We feel that the majority of our guests that stay (as reflected on various reviews) with us, have written so many positive and wonderful comments about their experience at the hotel.

From your description of the bed quality you encountered - this was our studio suite which has a murphy bed. This represents a very small portion of our suites - majority are One bedroom and Two bedrooms with queen size bed, seperate bedroom, living room and full kitchen. No murphy beds in them.

We recognize the challenges with comfort with the murphy bed product. The murphy bed mattress is considerably softer and therefore we always advertise this type of bed and reflect our lowest rates (always considerably priced under $200) for this room category.

Our onsite Bistro and Bar offers local ingredients from the local farms and suppliers. It is a small plates menu, but many of our guests comment on the excellent uniqueness of the Bistro with quality of taste, service and good experience in this area, partnered well with in room dining service and live jazz every Wednesday.

We do hope that you contact the hotel directly so that we can extend for you to come back and stay with us in the near future to reinstill the quality, service and beautiful hotel that the Oswego is recognized for.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I booked with the Oswego. It is a lovely looking hotel from the outside, and the entrance is lovely also.

The suites are, as others have commented a bit more function than form, with rather drab colours and stock photographs. However, the balcony in the sunny am was wonderful and the french press with good quality coffee made a wonderful wake up experience.

The set up for the TV in the bedroom is poor as it is off to the left and one has to crick one's neck to watch. Never mind the position of the tv, we had to have it fixed twice while we were there because it was stuck on a game channel. We were unable to use the guide on our bedroom tv which is a drag as the system is a satellite system and there are hundreds of channels from which to choose. (That's a good thing, but without a guide is a challenge).

The bed was very comfortable and the venue lovely and quiet.

We stayed two nights and our suite wasn't cleaned all day despite the fact we were gone for a good three hours mid day.

The breakfast in the restaurant was passable, but uninspired.

Everyone working here was very friendly and accommodating of my requests and concerns.

One other pet peeve - only one bathrobe in the bathroom when two people are occupying the suite....not sure why....and no wireless internet unless you asked to have it set up....only one plug in for the main room.

I might stay here again, but couldn't give it an outstanding review.

We are so glad that you recently enjoyed your stay at the Oswego Hotel. Thank you for taking the time to complete a review about your stay. The points mentioned, we will definately focus on with the various teams to ensure that our future guests don't experience some of the challenges you encountered with regard to the TV's etc.

Over recent weeks we have been working with Bell Express-vu and are happy to report that all suites are in the process of receiving updated TV guides. We unerstand that being one of the few hotels in Victoria that offer HD TV, that without the proper guide instructions it can be a challenge.

We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to the Oswego Hotel in the hope that next time you will give us an outstanding review like so many have.

Stayed here for 4 nights, through the TELUS Skins golf tournament.

Similar look and feel to new Westin or W hotels. All suites. Kitchen has full size appliances. Bathroom has a separate tub and glass shower.

Great lobby bar. Great front desk staff. Nice decorating throughout hotel and rooms.

Only complaints are that the lighting in the bathroom could have been brighter (although I did like the fixture), and the outside wall is all glass, with blinds, which lets a lot of morning light in. All queen size beds, too. I prefer a king size, myself.

Secure underground parking, if you have a car.

French press for your coffee.

HD satellite TV setup in the living room. Think it was standard definition in the bedroom.

The hotel has a very expensive, contemporary vibe. Very roomy. A few of the tournament golfers were staying here, as well, so that's a good testimonial.

It's hard to imagine a better-located hotel in Victoria. The Oswego manages to be away from the busy-ness of downtown, yet only two blocks from the harbor (including the major ferry terminals) and three blocks from the British Columbia legislative assembly buildings. We were glad to have dispensed with our rental car after arriving in Victoria from other points on Vancouver Island; the downtown is compact, interesting, and walkable, and this hotel near most points of interest. Since it stands on the edge of the residential James Bay district, rooms are quiet inside and out. We were amazed at the size of our suite--as others have pointed out, far more like a one-bedroom condo than an ordinary hotel room. The staff helpfully showed us where to find a market within walking distance, and we made breakfast each day in our full kitchen--not our usual routine on vacation, but enjoyable in this case. The hotel provides excellent, locally roasted coffee--a staple on Vancouver Island--and also a French press in your room, a nice touch. A spacious balcony offered views over neighborhood houses with the snow-covered mountains of Washington State in the distance. You can see them even more vividly by walking south a few blocks to the pretty waterfront park.

James Bay offers a pleasant summer farmer's market on Saturday morning, worth checking out for delicious jams and local color. For excellent small-plate dishes, cheeses, and expert pairings with British Columbia wines, also check out Sips Artisan Bistro, 425 Simcoe Street--again within walking distance. It's a casual space for an early dinner and we enjoyed it.
