“Suites great for families”
Reviewed August 27, 2008

Got a good deal on this through Clipper Vacations.

The pluses:

- Suites great for families with young kids. A door to the master bedroom allows mom and dad to kick back and read/watch TV while kids sleep (or watch the other TV) on foldout queen in main room).

- Full kitchen good if you want to save money and eat a meal or two in, but with so many great restaurants (and no easy grocery shopping) in Victoria, not really advised. Nice to have a place to bring leftovers back to, though.

- Easy 2 min. walk to inner harbor, 7 min. walk to downtown.

- Very clean, chic decor, appears to have been remodeled very recently.

- Free Internet (wired)

- Free green apples!

Minuses:

- Air. There are thermostats but apparently just for heat. It wasn't hot at all outside (65 degrees?) for our late August visit and really not BAD inside, but enough for us to need to open the balcony window at night, which meant more street noise (and then it got a bit cold in the middle of the night). Fortunately the street wasn't too loud. If it had been a hot day, our review may have been very different.

- View. The hotel is a couple blocks away from the water. Although we "requested" a harbor view, we weren't lucky enough to be up high and facing the water, and so just had a street view. Oh well, not super high on our priority list, but it might be on yours.

- No DVD. With a "suite" of this calibre, it would have been nice to supply one or two DVD players (heck, these days a cheap one is about the price of 10 green apples!) But fear not if you have a portable DVD player and AV cord with RCA jacks -- the LCD TVs input panel is accessible from the back ;)

- They forgot to make up our room. Doh!

Tip: if you live by your morning jolt, learn how to operate a coffee press before you go!

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay at the Oswego! The hotel is fairly new so we were pleased with the furnishings and overall appearance. We booked the Summer Suite package directly with the hotel, which includes breakfast and parking. I believe if you book with websites like expedia, you won't receive breakfast and parking (which is $20/day). Breakfast was delicious - served in an elegant & chic setting with a range of fruits (i.e. pineapple, blueberries, kiwis, etc), eggs, cold meats, cheese, yogurt with fresh fruits, and cereal. A free newspaper is left at your door in the morning and a complimentary basket of green apples and coffee in your hotel room. Our bedroom suite had two TVs, one in the bedroom and one in the bathroom. Kitchen was just as equipped as my own (from cutlery to dishes, to cheese grater and blender!) Front desk was extremely helpful and friendly. Great location, just minutes away from the Inner Harbour but not too close so you get some peace and quiet in your room. My only complaint is there are only 10 dvd players for the whole hotel so ask for one when you check in. We asked for one on our last night and none were available.

NO air whatsoever in the rooms!! We had a miserable nights sleep, even with the fan on and the door to the hallway open! We even opened the refridgerator to give some coolness. The hotel couldn't give us another room with a balcony to have some air, they were all out of fans, and nothing else could be done!!
What a waste of a beautiful hotel/evening experience!
The rooms only have baseboard heaters, no air, so if you want to roast all night long, this is the hotel for you.
Also, if you look on the hotel home page,it says that the breakfast is included in your room fee, but look-out, its a $15.00 room charge. Also, the towels that are advertised as "plush" are just regular bath towels.
The plus about this hotel, it is close to the Ferry landings.
I wished all night long that I was at the Best Western that I could see out our window, with cool air coming from the A/C unit.

We (couple in our mid-20’s) stayed at the Oswego the 15th-17th of August. Overall the staff was polite, and the service was good. The hotel is modern, clean and furnished nicely (something we appreciate) – I really like the apartment style accommodation and would consider staying here again.

Location
We really liked the hotel’s location, it was only 3 blocks from downtown, but located in a quiet residential neighborhood. There were a ton of restaurants/shops nearby (including a grocery store), and we were able to park our car for the weekend. (There is a $10 per day parking charge for secure underground parking, or free parking on the street during the weekend – there is free parking around it M-F but only for 2 hours at a time)

Room
We had originally booked a studio style suite with the wall bed, but upon arrival were given a 1 bedroom suite on the first floor. There are only 2 rooms on ground level, and the access to them was a bit weird. You had to walk behind the resturant kitchen, which I found a bit awkward, but the rooms themselves were very quite. I’m not too sure if we were upgraded to the 1 bdrm because it was the ground floor, some people might see it as a negative thing, but we really loved having a huge, closed off, private patio to ourselves instead of a small deck on the upper floors. It was a great place to sit in the sun, and read a book with a happy hour cocktail. (In fact, next time we stay I'll ask for the ground floor 1 bdrm)

The bedroom (which was a bonus as we weren’t expecting to get it) had good closet space & a flat screen TV opposite the bed), the bathroom was large and clean with a separate bathtub & shower.

The room was equipped with digital cable but kept cutting out, only a few channels were working & the TV would freeze every few minutes. Which on vacation normally wouldn’t be a big issue, except we kept trying to watch some of the Olympic coverage and had to give up.

Gym
I’m a bit of a picky gym snob, so I wasn’t impressed with the size of the gym, or equipment choices. The gym is tiny and almost every space is taken up with something (not always useful), leaving very little room for callisthenic type exercises/abs and stretching. With two of us in there we kept getting in each others way.

Breakfast
We didn’t eat in their restaurant, so we can’t comment on that – but we did have breakfast. The breakfast was mostly fruit, cereals and breads, they also had hard boiled eggs available. My only thing was the inconsistancy – the first morning we had great service, lots of selection and everything was fine, the next morning (at the same time as the previous day) the service wasn't as great, and the food selection (especially in the breads/bagels/scones) was almost non existant with only a few slices of bread....

Overall the Oswego was a great place to stay. If it’s in your price range, and would utilize the kitchen I'd recommend it. I also loved that it's pet friendly, we didn't bring the dog but would next time.

The Oswego was located in a convenient spot. The room/bathroom seemed recently updated. However, the Murphy bed was not very comfortable. Most importantly, I do not like hotels that try to be so updated with technology that you need a user manual to turn on the TV (literally). After managing to get the TV turned on, all I had was static. I had to refer to the guide in my room to figure out how to get back on the satellite, and then there were 3-5 channels with the same programming, over and over again. Call me old fashioned, but I just wanted to watch the news. Staff was helpful and pleasant.
