I'm sure that other people will love the menu and cooking here, especially if you like traditional French style food.I chose the wrong dish, however, which is hardly the restaurant's fault, and I could tell the food was of good quality and an interesting take on traditional recipes; it was just too rich for me. And I think that might be the case with a few of their dishes.

It was pretty quiet when I was there. I liked the modern style - clean lines and not too stark.

I would give it another go, just choose differently. If you like fine good, try it!

If your taste in food is conservative "meat and potatoes" fare, then maybe The Black Hat by Bistro 28 wouldn't be your best choice. But if you like eclectic fare presented artfully at reasonable prices, then by all means give this great restaurant in Victoria a try. The menu is varied and features fresh seasonal local cuisine as well as some classics. Our meal last night included "beef tartare" as an appetizer (best I've had outside of the Latin Quarter in Paris), steamed mussels in a chipolte sauce, a wonderful feature called "Duck in a Jar" which was literally turned out of a steaming canning jar at our table, a wonderful baby back rib entree, and fresh local halibut. The homemade sorbets and lemon meringue pie was delicious too!

We were a large party on a Sunday evening and had no trouble getting seated.
We took advantage of the $7 starters (only on Sunday nights) and really enjoyed them (grilled romaine & marinated beet salads; charcuterie, pork belly [decidedly better at Bistro 28], beef tartare, Carpaccio & mussels.) Even got an extra sampling from the kitchen!!
Only the Caesar drink was disappointing as it tasted more like a Bloody Mary (no clamato, just tomato juice!) Local ales ordered were good.
Halibut, steaks, burger and steelhead trout were well cooked, presented beautifully and the flavours were wonderful!
The dessert selection was good, a must try is the S'mores for two, as it involves homemade marshmallows, chocolate ganache and graham crackers (some assembly required, which turns out to be quite the show, as it involves FIRE!!)
We had excellent service and will return here to try more of their recipes. We will absolutely recommend to family & friends, even over Bistro 28!
Restaurant right on northeast corner of Langley and Broughton Streets.

Walked by numerous times, seems to be always quite. Liked Bistro 28 so when we couldn't get into our first choice the other night we thought we would give it a try. Not bad but not great on all counts. Service was pretty good, friendly welcome and reasonable good table service. Room has lots of potential - again just OK in my opinion. Food mediocre. Probably wouldn't go back right away but so much potential perhaps time will help...or not. Hope it finds its stride.
