The manager "upgraded" us to a suite. When we got into the room, it smelled like rotting fish. We turned on the loud AC unit hoping it would go away and left to explore the city. We came back with the smell seemingly gotten worst. Called the front desk to request for another room and immediately and quite arrogantly informed us that they're completely booked with no apologies for the discomfort we were experiencing nor were any options given. Instead, he pretty much blamed it on us for waiting for a long time between the time we checked in and the time I was calling and that they would not be able to sell the room anymore by that time. I felt like this was a really bad customer service, that is, he's more concerned about the room not getting sold over the customer's discomfort. Only after I gave my comments back to him did he suggest that I speak with the manager the next day. Also, the bathroom smelled like they were cleaned with rags soaked in urine. And when I took out a pan to boil water, the pan still had food crust in it. The sink still had bits of bacon meats in it and there were only 3 TV stations at the most that were actually viewable. The electrical outlets are so bad that my phone charger plugs kept falling off of it. I've stayed in discount hotels before but never with this type of experience. STAY OUT OF THIS HOTEL!!!! FOR ANOTHER 10-20 bucks, you can get a better and enjoyable place to stay and enjoy your vacation!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When our original hotel booking had a lacrosse team spending the weekend, we decided to seek another place. This Howard Johnson is near "The Gorge" area of Victoria, is quite clean, has a friendly staff, and is on the way to Butchart Gardens, about 20 minutes north. If you come to Victoria with a car, it's much less expensive to stay out of the main "tourist trap" as the locals call the downtown area. Of course, they have lovely hotels down there . . . but this is so convenient, has free internet, warm and friendly staff . . . so I recommend it as an option for those a bit more concerned about the price of accommodations. With the US dollar going for all of $1.03 Canadian as of June, 2007, it makes getting deals harder. We liked this place just fine and found convenient parking downtown when needed. We also enjoyed getting off the beaten path and watching hang gliders, kite boarders, and dog walkers at Beacon Hill Park.

If you want to conveniently enjoy beautiful downtown Victoria, this hotel is far too remote for that. It is about a $12 cab ride or a $2 bus trip into downtown. Also you can walk into town (about 30 minutes) along a nice bike trail along the "gorge" waterway. No easy access to restaurants nearby. The hotel restaurant, I'm sorry to say, is just awful, serving nearly all microwaved processed food at the usual high hotel prices. Staff is really pleasant and seems to be very responsive & tries to please, but is disorganized. Rooms are large, clean, and adequately equipped. My room overlooked a noisy parking lot and was occasionally invaded by pungent smells of Chinese food being reheated in a microwave somewhere in the hotel. Also suggest you bargain a bit for your room. I booked a few advance days at a "reduced" Elderhostel rate of $79, but I heard the front desk booking rooms for $69 and even $55. See if you can get a reduced rate.

Stayed at hotel with our sons hockey teaM. It was clean and the rooms were huge, some of us had kitchens too!
I personally like how quiet it was and outside our window was a nature trail- no cars - no kids!
My wife is usually very finicky and even she was happy!
Best of all my sons team won the tournament

I cannot believe there are good reviews for this Howard Johnson on the Gorge area of Victoria. What supposed to be a 3 night stay was limited to 1 night due to lack of customer service from every department of the hotel. The room was rather expensive and out dated.
We took a chance to stay at a different hotel down the road and found it a little better. The price was more reasonable but again poor service.
The third night we took a chance near the Inner Harbor and found it very comfortable for the same price that we paid on the Gorge. This left us with bitter memories and never to stay on the Gorge again.

We had a group of 25 girls and stayed at Howard Johnson Hotel City Centre Victoria.
We had a problem with our luggage and I was shocked at how much time and effort the front desk put in to help us located our luggage. Not only they did evething possible to help us all out.
The staff really did care we were not just a Hotel guest, we were people and I was so impressed.
The Hotel had a pool, fitness room and restaurant so we were able to relax until our bags arrived. If it was not for the Staff and Hotel facilties it could of been a nightmare
Thanks to the staff it turned out to be a great trip

We just returned from Victoria/Vancouver yesterday and had a fantastic time. We booked through the "Tourism Victoria" website and got a rate of CAD$49/night, which was a great deal. After checking in, the front desk clerk was happy to suggest options for whale-watching companies, and even booked one on our behalf (getting us a better deal). The staff were very pleasant and helpful. Our room was clean and had all the amenities we needed (TV, phone, wireless internet, A/C, etc). It was nothing fancy but more than satisfactory. It was also very close to downtown area. Our only disappointment was the A/C was a wall-mounted unit, which was noisy when running at night. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel.
