“Horribly disappointed!!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2008

After carefully researching B&B's in the Victoria area, I settled on Across the Harbour. The reviews were wonderful, the pictures of the garden looked heavenly, the enticement of goat's milk soap and epsom salts for the bath, complimentary juices, water, and a gourmet breakfast clinched the decision. I was in for unbelievable disappointment for my first-time B&B stay. First off, the outside of the house, i.e., the grounds, looked unbelieveably uncared for. The garden was seriously overgrown and untended. The fountain had about 1.5" of brown scummy water in it. The small "pond" was still and dank-looking. There was evidence that large pots that had once lined the side of house but most of them were gone. It was as if the house had been moved out of and not taken care of for a while. The house was abysmally uninviting once inside. A small entryway with 2 closed doors on either side (guest rooms), and 1 closed door straight ahead. Very closed off and "off-limits" feeling. Just not as I had imagined. Our room was as pictured. It was very clean. Stuffy and stale but assumed perhaps it had been shut away during the winter. No goat's milk soap, shampoo/conditioner, herbal bubblebath or Epsom salts but pedestrian products from Bath and Body Works. Oh well, I could get over that. The bed cover (not the goosedown duvet as advertised) had a large stain on top of it. Complimentary bottles of Perrier but no ice. Went downstairs and opened the door I assumed was to the kitchen to get ice. I was completely shocked at how messy and unkempt the kitchen and apparent innkeeper living quarters was. No wonder the door was closed! It reminded me of a college dorm. Dirty dishes on the counter, smeared, dried waffle batter on the counter. Unmade bed. It was just filthy. There was hardly any ice in the freezer. A few mm of ice in each cube hole. Where was the complimentary juice, sodas, hot chocolate, hot cide other than the carton of Dole tropical juice in the upstairs fridge? I certainly didn't feel welcome enough in the disaster area of the kitchen to look for the advertised complimentary beverages and our young hostess only appeared long enough to show us to our room and knock on our door to tell us breakfast was ready. The "gourmet" breakfast was a complete and utter joke: Scrambled eggs, bacon, frozen hashbrowns, toast, individual tubs of yogurt and granola. A lowly grocery tub of margarine was on the table for our toast. To be fair there was strawberry preserves and peanut butter on the table for our toast. There was a nice platter of fruit. Dole tropical juice. Coffee was good though. No napkins were provided. It's as almost everything was an afterthought. Nothing out of the ordinary. For $175!!!

Perhaps ACTH B&B has been bought from the fabled Barbara and Lorne since the reviews and web pages were made? Perhaps Barbara and Lorne were on an extended vacation somewhere, leaving their B&B in the hands of an employee? Because the ACTH B&B was NOTHING like the description. It certainly did not merit the $175 I paid to stay there for 1 night.

I would most definitely NOT recommend this place to anyone. Perhaps if the price were lowered to $95 a night would I recommend it or perhaps stay again.

This review is a little dated. We stayed at this Inn very briefly back in 2005. However the treatment we received from the innkeepers was so horrific it merits review. First, the room we were given was an unventilated room that was actually interior to the Kitchen. The window opened to the Kitchen and not the outdoors. No possibilty for privacy. We had a jacuzzi room which we paid extra for. When we got there we were instructed not to run it after 9pm. Very romantic.

Ultimately we left. We called the innkeeper and offered to pay for the night and the frazzled innkeeper threatened my wife. Scary people.

AdrianVictoria, Owner/Manager at Across the Harbour Bed and Breakfast, responded to this review, August 21, 2007
This gentleman and his partner checked into their room in the afternoon and left after 10 pm that night. He slipped a note under our door before leaving. After we read the note, we tried to put the charge for the room on his credit card. Payment was denied. He had paid us $70 upon arrival and said he would pay the rest later. We phoned the cell phone on his reservation form. He informed us that he would not be paying for the room that night or for the next night he had reserved. He said that when he had booked we had stated that there was a ceiling fan and there was only a stand-up fan in the room. He stated that he was a lawyer and we would not be paid. He was right - we didn't have his signature on a credit card receipt so we were not paid the $225/night we were owed.

All our rooms have two windows in them for ventilation. It was a hot day - in the 80's - unusual for Victoria with an average temperature of 68 F in our hottest months of July and August. Our cool temperatures explains why homes and bed and breakfasts in Victoria do not have air-conditioning. Only hotels and public buildings have it.

The room the gentleman was referring to opens onto the veranda. The veranda is wide open at the front, overlooking the garden and Victoria Harbour. There is a reproduction 1923 wood cookstove in this room, which is used as a heat source when mornings are a little nippy. Breakfast is served on the veranda. The kitchen is on the main floor (the veranda is on the second floor) and is in the private area of the house, not accessible to the public.

We have air-jetted tubs for two with 42 jets in them in three of our rooms. We ask guests not to turn on the jets after 9:30 pm as jets are very noisy and could disturb other guests. Our guests have understood this and have never had a problem extending this courtesy to others.

We hope this couple enjoys smooth sailing on any trips they may make in the future. But we also hope they will not be sailing into this Harbour again.

My wife and I enjoyed everything about our visit at the B&B of Barbara and Lorne, making the mini-vacation from Seattle one that we will fondly remember.

It was our first "motorcycle vacation" on our Goldwing. After unpacking the bike, we received a warm welcome from Barbara who aquainted us with her B&B and gave us plenty of ideas for things to do... in addition to all that Victoria has to offer, take a ride on the boat shuttle that departs just a little ways down the boardwalk from their B&B; it will take you across the harbor, to the doorstep of the big city of Victoria.... However, we also enjoyed a romantic stroll along the same boardwalk (which you can take into downtown) with the city lights sparkling on the water; just a little ways along the boardwalk, we stopped at a British-style pub for some delicious fish and chips... as recommended by Barbara.

Everything about the room and bath was immaculate and cozy. The bed and pillows were as comfortable as they could be. The room was private (ours was the one connected to the deck so I expected some lack of privacy but was surprised at the quiet and privacy we enjoyed). Breakfast was delicious and relaxing. Before departing, we asked Barbara and Lorne if one of them wouldnt mind taking a photo of us with our camera in their beautiful garden. They walked us outside and spent another 1/2 hour with us as Lorne snapped pictures for us. They really are wonderful people. We will be back... after our new daughter is old enough! Thanks from Brian and Rosanna...

We loved our time (only two nights regretably) at this lovely B&B. Host and hostess were wonderful , informative and helpful. Great breakfasts, great location. We loved that we could walk , drive or take the little harbour ferry into downtown ...and then just as easily escape. Being a boater, we loved to walk down to the quiet marina. And the ferries were wonderful ! Thank you!

Expect to see a wonderfully furnished room/sitting room with a private Jacuzzi for two and bathroom. A sunroom upstairs always has beverages and reading materials. There is also a beautiful sight of their English Garden and the bay where sailboats float by. It is a short distance from the little transport ferries that taxi you to town, or if you feel like a nice walk there is a boardwalk alongside the water that take you all the way to town. A marvelous restaurant called The Spinnaker is a short 15 minute walk on the boardwalk. Try their Seafood Chowder and stop in front for some delicious truffles. The sites and smells along the boardwalk are marvelous and so are Lorne's huge breakfasts. He serves fresh fruit daily and will wake your tastebuds with great waffles, eggs Benedict, or fried eggs, all accompanied with generous portions of meat from ham to bacon to sausage. He adds a nice touch by having potatoes or fresh tomatoes and avocados. You will have fresh fruit juice and throughout the day an endless supply of coffee, teas, juices, and sodas or bottled water to take with you. This wonderful couple will give you complete privacy or entertain with genuine hospitality, which ever is your pleasure. Personally, I can't wait to see them again and enjoy their B&B.

Our stay at the Across The Harbour B&B was the very finest in our long history of travel. My wife and I, now in our seventies, were highly impressed with the quality of the facility, the comfort of the surroundings, and the convenience of the location. Most impressive, however, was the kind, thoughtful, yet unobtrussive attention afforded us by the proprieters, Barbara and Lorne. Their knowledge of the area, and their keen interest in assuring we enjoyed our week's visit, filled each day with events we thoroughly enjoyed and memories we will treasure for years to come.

A word is required regarding the quality of each day's breakfast. Lorne is the cook - and his talent is far beyond the level of "ordinary". Each morning's meal was excellent with regard to taste, sumptuous with regard to quantity, and aesthetically attractive with regard to presentation.

My wife and I were given the Kingfisher room. The bathroom, with its modern double shower and "jet air" tub, allowed us to rejuvinate tired bones after each enjoyable day of sightseeing. The room's furnishing are of very high quality, and we found the bed especially comfortable.

For my wife and I, the only place for us to stay during future visits to Victoria will be the Across The Harbour B&B. We recommend it most highly to anyone visiting the area.
