We originally wanted to stay at the Fairmont Empress due to the hype in the Victoria Tourism brochures, etc. However, we're glad we didn't as the poor ol' Empress is being rejuvenated at present and has loads of scaffolding over its windows (see separate review of the Empress).
By staying at the Magnolia, not only did we get an interconnecting King Signature Suite plus Double Queen Suite for $159 each per night ($318 total - a saving of more than $200 per night from the scaffolded Empress!), we got modern rooms with Aveda amenities, a beautiful King bed, meticulous service, and a fabulous downtown location with great views only metres from the Empress (where we plan to do an afternoon tea) plus all the other downtown attractions in Victoria.
If you're staying in Victoria and you don't plan on staying in your room 24/7, but still want great views, great centrality and great service, then stay here! It's a real treat.More
