“One of a Kind”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

We stayed in the "cottage", which is actually a funky house adjoining the hotel property. We were surprised to discover that we had two bedrooms, full bath, dining room, living room and full kitchen at our disposal - all for far less than the price of a typical hotel suite. Parking included to boot! Having spent time trying to find accommodation in the area for two couples travelling together, I can safely say that this is a rare find. You could easily add another couple or kids using the sofa bed in the living room. The location is walking distance to the Inner Harbour, Beacon Hill park and Dalles Road. A full grocery store and other services (don't miss Serious Coffee!) is two blocks away. Hotel staff was very helpful and pleasant. The hotel gives guests a discount in their restaurant, and the food is good. Watch for the '3 course dinner special', a good deal that becomes exceptional when the discount is applied. JBI obviously has a good number of regulars that frequent both the pub and the restaurant. We enjoyed the whole experience. Don't get the cottage for the view - there is none - and be aware that it backs on to the hotel parking lot, so don't imagine yourself sitting in the back yard. The front yard, however, was enjoyable! JBI is not a luxury hotel, but if you're interested in atmosphere and want a clean, friendly place at a reasonable price in a great location, you've found it.

This is definitely your European old hotel feel. The staff were excellent and the hotel clean, and comfortable. We enjoyed the pub and restaurant and enjoyed the discount for inn guests. A great location in a homey neighborhood with easy walk to Inner Harbor, Beacon Hill Park and shore. We even encountered a peacock in the neighborhood who had walked over from the Park..quite a fun experience. We were there for eight days so having a friendly staff was very important. We had a room with two queens and private bath..and the unused public bath on the floor was right next door, so it was almost like having two baths. This is the best deal in Victoria

Room Tip: ask for room with bath

My husband and I and out 12-year-old son stayed one night at the James Bay in July. The room with two queen beds and a private bath was very comfortable. It was nice to stay in an independent establish rather than another branded hotel. The inn is located a few blocks from the harbor in a quiet neighborhood which made for a nice walk. It has its own pub and restaurant. The food at both breakfast and dinner was very good and the pub crew quite friendly. We only wish we could have stayed a few more nights.

Room Tip: This hotel has both shared and private bath facilities so confirm which one you prefer.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review.
I am so happy to hear that your family enjoyed your stay here at The James Bay Inn and I hope that you will be able to visit us again one day soon!
I am also glad you enjoyed the food from our pub and restaurant, they work very hard down there to provide quality, reasonably priced fare with a smile and are always happy to hear when someone has enjoyed their experience there.
I would like to clarify that all of our guest rooms and suites are equipped with a private bathroom, we do offer one adjoining room that shares a bathroom but you would only be sharing with your own party. We do have public washrooms available for everyone's convenience on each floor of the main hotel.
Thank you again for posting your kind words!

Cheers!

We loved this hotel! Our room was small but very clean and nice. The hotel has a great atmosphere, very comfortable, and the staff could not be more friendly. There are at least two shared balconies - great for playing cards & watching the sunset. In the lobby they always have fresh ice water with lemon (perfect for warm days) and hot tea and coffee. The location was in easy walking distance of the inner harbour, parliament bldg, museums, shopping, and restaurants. We felt very safe and welcome at this hotel!

We stayed in the main part of the hotel. I cannot say enough about how good this place is. Not only are the beds extremely comfortable, blackout curtains on the windows (when drawn) and a small fridge in the room along with a desk, chairs etc, it has a great restaurant and a great pub. It was quiet, rates are great and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. It is a short walk to downtown and is in a very quiet area. If you wish there is a large grocery store and liquor store just a block away. I want to mention that I accidentily left $15 (along with a copy of my receipt from our breakfast bill) on the table in the lounge area near the lobby. One of the ladies working in the hotel found it and tracked me down to return it later that day. That little act in itself spoke volumes in my mind both about the attitude of the whole staff and the way the James Bay Inn is managed. Do yourself a favor and stay here. I know we will never stay any place else.

Great place to overnight if you are biking on the Lochside and Galloping Goose trails and you need a Victoria overnight stay. They have storage for bikes, and is only 4-5 blocks away from the bay. We stayed there, rooms are large with very comfortable beds. Close to start of Galloping Goose and Lochside trails.

We stayed two nights in the Garden Suite in the Heritage House, next door to the main building. The suite was spacious and clean with hardwood floors and a nice kitchen and bathroom. It was easy to feel at home there. The Inn is located in a older, residential neighborhood, which we quite enjoyed. It's within easy walking distance of the Inner Harbour and the downtown area of Victoria. There is a pretty good pub/restaurant on the premises, which is convenient, especially for breakfast. If we were to return to Victoria, we would stay there again.
