We booked our room as part of a package deal.I must say that it was a very nice stay. The room was pretty basic (which is perfect for us) .This hotel is an older style , however it was spotless. I think the biggest advantage to staying here is the location ,lots to see in all directions and the Inner Harbour is only a 15 minute walk. The staff here was very friendly as well. The only negative that comes to mind is the fact that there is no elevator here.I would stay here again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 day stay with 2 other couples in adjoining rooms. Excellent area, accommodations, and service (wonderful restaurant and pub also.) We would certainly love to do it all over again!

I loved staying at James Bay Inn for many reasons but the number one reason was the location. It was walking distance to everything. Another reason is the bar/restaurant downstairs. It has great food, it was pretty cheap, and it has darts, which is important to me. Another reason we stayed is because it's cheap. The rooms are plain but fine. It's not a Hilton or anything so don't go into it expecting that. But it's a great deal for what you get.

From the outside, James Bay Inn looks like an old hotel of the traditional British sort, and appearances do not deceive. In the traditional style, parking is somewhere off round the corner, there are no lifts, and the climb to your room begins with a few dozen front steps to the lobby, which is nicely decorated and not too shabby, and has a few '80s paperbacks to read while you catch your breath. Whilst assistance with your cases may be available, it isn't offered. Rooms are small and workmanlike with comfortable beds, upgraded a few years ago with televisions and low-budget ensuite baths, but the old baths are still there and you can get the old-school experience by ignoring your own bath and going down the hall. There is no temperature control in the rooms at all, and our third-floor room was stifling hot even in the middle of January, WITH the table fan going full-blast and the window fully open, and my wife felt it even worse than I did. If you are security-minded, you will want to specify a room WITH a working deadbolt at reservation--not all doors have them, ours didn't. Again in the old style there are no in-room coffeemakers, so it's down to the restaurant for the morning cuppa. A decanter of coffee is put out on a serving table in the lobby, but unless you are one of the first five people there you will find it empty. Overall effect is that of Fawlty Towers on a day when Polly is in charge. If you are a thin-blooded fitness maniac, or an over-fifty Briton nostalgic for the seaside accommodations of your childhood, James Bay Inn will suit you.

And now for the good part; the restaurant downstairs. Good prices, great food, and service from a young staff who are keen to please. Stay somewhere else, eat here. Two stars, which go entirely to the restaurant.

Room Tip: You might try the Guest House. I can't recommend the main hotel.

Was pleasantly surprised at this lovely inn. Great walking location to the cute downtown districts of Victoria. Friendly and helpful front desk staff. Room was simple and tiny but clean and the mattress decent. Free wifi (sometime spotty service but not bad-there is a free public computer in the lobby), good cafe and a pub in the basement. Lots of charm and style. No elevator so keep that in mind if that is important to you. Highly recommend!

The James Bay Inn isn't fancy or modern, but the rooms are clean, space is adequate, staff is friendly and with the location plus free parking and wifi, you can't beat the deal. Will be appreciated by anyone fond of quirky charm!

We chose James Bay Inn as part of a package including a Victoria Clipper passage. After a 1/2 mile walk from the harbor, we were assigned a very small room. It featured a bed, a desk, two tiny bedside tables mounted on the wall, and a tv on a stand. The room door was a cheap, thin interior grade door. There was no clock, radio, or hairdryer. We requested a crib for our baby, and was handed a pack-n-play. After we set it up, we couldn't open the room door all the way because the room was too small. The hot water in the shower kept fluctuating. Everything was very clean, and the staff were friendly.

The lobby was nicely decorated. However, there isn't a whole lot to do. One must pay for a newspaper, and there was only complimentary coffee. A few old paperbacks are all there is to browse through.

It was a surprise to learn we had to pay for our local phone calls placed from our room (50 cents each, + tax).

Who knows. Maybe one could get a better room if it wasn't part of a package.
