My daughter and I stayed at the inn for 6 nights. It was very quiet and homey. It's not an extravagant hotel, but it had everything I needed. The room and bed were clean. The bathroom had a corner shower that some might find small, but we thought it was fine. My only complaint was the shower spray was a little weak. The bedspread and blanket smelled fresh. The window was large and could be opened to let in the wonderful fresh air of Victoria. We awakened to the sound of sea gulls. No need for air conditioning. There was free Wi-Fi and a small TV. Fresh, good coffee for free in the lobby every morning and ice water later in the day. Only a short walk to the inner harbour where on weekends especially, there is a lot going on. I definitely enjoyed staying here more than some big chain hotel. The staff were all very pleasant.

We got off the ferry, drove the several blocks to the hotel and parked the car. Went everywhere on foot as we toured the city sites and enjoyed the tours thru the Parliament Bldg and Museum. Wish we had several more hours to take a water taxi tour. And the Pub below the hotel was a great late night stop for beer and nachos.

Room Tip: Old hotel with bathrooms down the hall are a great option for less expensive room and an old time feeling of nostalgia.

The James Bay Inn is a 100-year-old hotel, and it shows its age. This is not a bad thing. The floors creak, there is lots of old-fashioned carpeting and wood, etc. The ambiance is great and a lovely departure from the shiny modern hotels many people seem to prefer. The staff were all great, and the restaurant downstairs serves excellent, very reasonably-priced food. In the hotel lobby you will find a container of fresh ice water and good coffee. Our room was small but clean. The bed was comfortable. There's free wifi. What more do you really need?

The value and location can't be beaten. The harbour is a ten-minute walk (whale watching companies, Empress Hotel, legislature building, BC Museum, artisans booths, restaurants, etc.) down a lovely, treed residential street.

TRAVEL TIP: You can get from downtown Victoria (six minutes from the James Bay Inn) all the way to the ferry terminal at Swartz Bay by public transit for $2.50. Yes, $2.50! The 70x express bus gets you there with very few stops. What a bargain!

Quaint room...no aircon and had to prop sash window open with coat-hanger!!! Sink in bedroom not bathroom but we could put up with that for one night. Clean. Breakfast and dinner large portions. Within 5/10 minutes walk of Parliament building and harbour. Great staff

This is a "retro" small hotel, which apparently tries to keep an early 20th century taste. The room had a spotless, modern bathroom, however, but the lock on the door was minimal when leaving during the day. (There's a deadbolt for when you are in the room). When we came, there was an old, musty smell dispite the fact that the big old window was open, but they fixed that with some modern room spray. The street is great! It's two blocks from the back of the Pariliment building, which is about six blocks from the waterfront and 7-8 from the bus station. If you walk one block to the right (the block, Toronto St. has pretty, fixed- up Victorian homes, and a tiny community garden) you can get to a supermarket across the street, and 3 coffee houses on this side, one with a bookstore. We bought breakfast and ate in the park another block away.
The hotel has what looks like a classy restaurant, and they give a discount, and a friendly pub where locals (?) threw darts. We didn't use either, though. There is coffee in the lobby in the morning. All staff were very helpful. There are no alternatives to stairs, if that is a problem.
The price was decent for high tourist season. I'm definitely recommending this to my family and friends who want a place to stay with flavor and most conveniences, but not all.

Room Tip: If you have a lot of luggage or trouble walking up stairs, ask for a room on the lower floors.
