I was looking for a simple, clean, quiet and friendly place to lay my head while visiting Victoria on my own, and found the James Bay Inn to be just that. The bed was comfortable and the staff quietly attentive. In a residential neighborhood a short walk from the ferry terminal, I felt welcome and made myself at home in this historic and affordable inn. I had a delicious meal in the pub-style restaurant downstairs. There is also another coffee-shop style eating area that serves breakfat, lunch and dinner. It's a short walk to the not-to-be-missed Royal British Columbia Museum. I had a great weekend!

We were also surprised at how good the food in the restaurant was: normally, hotel restaurants are more convenient than good, but the food and the service was well above our expectations, with reasonable prices and excellent food. Knowledgeable front desk staff, immaculate rooms and a warm ambience plus a quiet neighborhood only a short walk to the downtown center: very good in all respects. We will definitely stay here the next time we visit Victoria and have recommended it to all our friends.

It's July, Friday night, wife coming to meet me in Victoria after my staying at a large chain hotel... James Bay Inn showed a vacancy.

The neighbourhood is a few blocks from the tourist heart, yet this is an original area of old homes on narrow streets among which sits this 1911 hotel/apartment. It oozes history, funkiness and fun. Emily Carr House is down the block, Beacon Hill Park and Dallas Road a short walk away.

There are two houses annexed by the Inn and we rented a deluxe bedroom at the front of the green house. Lovely, with many rooms as per the period, spacious and nice view of the front garden in full bloom. It was $188.00 rack. A great hideaway to hole up in Victoria, in fact ,it is rented by the month in winter.

The pub is truly a neighbourhood gathering spot with good selection of draughts and pub food, while watching and listening to the locals. The restaurant is 50s style and original, as are many of the patrons. Food is solid comfort food prepared by cooking school students featuring local fresh ingredients. My liver and onions was accompanied by beautifully sliced and steamed veggies, my wife's shrimp and spinach salad had her sighing, "so fresh, so fresh ..."

This is not a chain, does not pretend to be ... Victoria has many top line hotels if that is your demand. But for a romantic little throwback, JBI is a find.

When we first tried to check into our hotel at 3pm we were told it wouldn't be ready until 3:30 so we looked at our map and saw that there was a park near by. We walked there and were able to see ducklings, turtles, and the nesting heron. We are so glad we took the short walk to the park.
After we came back we were able to check in and were upgraded to a suite which is in the cottage next door. It was apartment size and had a full kitchen, bathroom, and outdoor patio. It was a delightful surprise since it was our anniversary.
The staff that helped us was very friendly and willing to answer questions. Check out was simple and the walk downtown was easy. It is a slight uphill to the hotel and then slight downhill to downtown. It is in a peaceful quiet part of town, but the walk allowed us to enjoy people's gardens. You can really tell a lot of people take pride in their yards. If we had gotten a hotel closer to downtown we would have missed all of it.
After reading negative reviews we weren't so sure of this place, but we were pleasantly surprised. For the money this place is well worth it. Make your own opionions and dont focus on the negative ones. If we had we would have missed out on this place and paid a lot more.

We were very disappointed in this hotel/inn. Although the hotel is historic, the furnishing are just old and outdated. There was a huge gap under the door of Room 319 and the curtains didn't cover the entire windows so it was hard to sleep after 5:30 a.m. A plus was the huge bathroom and double shower heads.

We had a Clipper hotel package for two nights, so our room was pre-paid. When we arrived in Victoria we dropped by, they confirmed the reservation and told us to come back at 3 pm. At 5 pm we called to say we might not check in until 7 pm, which they said was fine. At 7 pm we arrived to find out the reservation had been cancelled, which they told us we had done, and then blamed the Clipper. We were just lucky they still had a room available, which after a lot of arguing, they finally let us have. The next day they said they'd "fixed it," and let us stay in the same room, which while large was very poorly furnished, had no amenities including even a guest book or extra pillows, had no closet, and which was dusty. The Clipper package price was good, as is the inn's location, but we were not impressed with the James Bay Inn.
