“Picture Perfect”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2007

We just returned from our 5th Annivesary where we spent 4 wonderful days at the Birds of a Feather B & B. The pictures and descriptions on the website were accurate to the smallest of details. We stayed in room #2 and were pleased with the cleanliness of the room and the modern feel. We found that Dieter was a most gracious host and very willing to point us and other guests in the right direction to find the most beautiful sights on the island. We were able to move around as we pleased and the use of the canoe and paddle boats were a great way to top off our last night there. We are already looking at ways to get back to the Birds of a Feather B&B.

A couple of great sights to see and places to visit if you stay here are the following:
- Hatley Castle
- Fort Rodd Hill and the Lighthouse
- Titanic exhibit if you make there this year at the Museum
- Barb's Fish and Chips
- Crossroads Pub and Grill (Try the stuffed mushrooms)

What a wonderful stay. We stayed in Room 2, and were very impressed with everything about this B&B and its two innkeepers. I stayed at Birds of a Feather in 2004, before their renovations, and again this June. It was excellent in 2004, and even more so now. Dieter and Annette are fantastic hosts who provided more than everything we needed to have a comfortable stay. Whenever we asked (day or night), they provided us with a wealth of information on local attractions and worthwhile day trips, and we found their recommendations to be spot-on. Both innkeepers took ample time to chat and get to know us and the other guests.

The room and common areas were immaculate, fresh, and very well appointed. HD TV, WiFi Internet access, kitchenette, and an amazing bathroom are just a few of the highlights.

The breakfasts... Wow! There is nothing "half-baked" (if you'll pardon the pun) about these breakfasts. They were all very well done, and expertly presented. The waffles (topped with ice cream, fruit, syrup, or almost however you like) were certainly a highlight.

They have a private dock (I think the only private dock) on the Esquimalt Lagoon in Greater Victoria, with paddle boat, kayaks, and canoes free for use anytime. The paddle boat trip around the very tranquil lagoon water is extremely relaxing. From the room (or attached deck), we had a full view of the lagoon, inner harbor, and Victoria skyline. Watching the sun rise from the chairs on the end of the dock, with geese and swans swimming within a few feet of us was rather breathtaking.

The other guests were very interesting as well. Through both trips, totaling more than two weeks at this B&B, I had the pleasure of meeting many other guests. A large percentage of the guests I met were return visitors, many of whom shared interesting stories.

Location-wise, this spot couldn't be better. There are several interesting sites within walking distance (such as Fort Rodd Hill and the Fisgard Lighthouse), as well as Hatley Park. It made a great base of operations for our stay.

All in all, I can't say enough good things about Birds of a Feather, Dieter, and Annette. I have heartily recommended this spot to friends, family, and business acquaintances.

It was worth every penny.

  • Liked — The welcoming atmosphere created by the innkeepers
  • Disliked — That we didn't stay longer.

We stayed at this B&B for our anniversary, the Honeymoon suite was beautiful. Lots of windows to look out on the lagoon and watch the birds. We have stayed in a few B&B's in the past and found this one was run very different than what we have become to expect. It seemed more like a hotel than a B&B. The only contact with the inn keepers were at breakfast, they were friendly and had lots of information on the area for you. They never entered your room for anything, which some would like but I would have at least liked my bed made. We needed soap because we ran out of the small bar that was in the room, so I asked for one... we found it on the floor outside of our room when we came back for the night. It had been raining and the soap was just there on the deck floor wet. We wondered why they at least did not put in in a baggie and tape it to the door to keep it clean and dry. You must empty your own garbage as well.Remember, the fact the owners never enter your room is a plus for some, it depends what you want or expect. We figured if we had stayed for only a couple of nights you might not notice these small things. So if you like total privacy, this is the place for you, it's new and the "rain shower" in the bathroom was wonderful!

Unfortunately we only spent 3 nights at this newly renovated B&B. Would love to return for a lot longer and not be playing tourist rushing around to see all the highlights. Booked online and within my confimation knew exactly that we would be charged prior to arrival. These days that is not so unusual especially at small locations. We felt that this treasure was quite a bargain!

Returning "home" each day was relaxing whether to sit in the comfy chairs & watch the U.S. Open on the plasma TV or be on the balcony looking out onto the lagoon. The rooms are large as are the baths. One evening we just bought sandwiches & ate in - room has a frig, microwave, plates, utensils, sink, etc. Even with this being a vacation, my husband & I were out on the dock at 6:30 am watching the sun rise & the ducks, geese & swans bathe. We are bird lovers so this was priceless.

Dieter & Annette were wonderful hosts, full of ideas on what to see. Dieter's suggestion to go to Butchart Gardens at 5:00 pm after the busses were gone was great - no crowds, free concert in the evening. Since we didn't have the time to get to the Pacific Rim Park, he said to travel up to Port Renfrew with trails through rainforests down to unspoiled beaches.

Research is always part of planning our trips - some people need to do more. We will return.

  • Liked — Spacious & fully equipped kitchen with microwave(no stove)
  • Disliked — Nothing - all fine
  • Tips/Secrets — This B&B is on a bird sanctuary. It is not a cookie cutter hotel site.

As we started our roundtrip through West- Canada, we first made a stop in Colwood where the B&B "Birds of a Feather" is located. We were absolutely stunned by what we saw. We had 2 rooms which both included a kitchen with microwave and a fridge. Besides that, the bathroom was well facilitated; huge bathtub, 2 showers, sink and toilet. The beds are really comfortable and will be changed regularly. For some more relaxation you are able to watch television in your room or you can sit outside on the terrace with a beautiful view on the ocean. There is also equipment outside which you can use like a canoe or kayakboats to explore some more of the environment.
The best thing about this B&B is that the owners make you feel at home by giving you a different breakfast every morning which is excellent! Also they give you all the information you need to know about Victoria and what they offer. For us, as tourists coming from Holland, it became very useful! What can I say more? Check it out for yourself and you'll agree with me that it's deffinately worth it!

We came out to Victoria for my husband's graduation ceremony at Royal Roads University on June 2006. We booked all 3 rooms, one for us and for each of our folks. The renovactions were just complete in April 2006 with the second floor added to the place and it is absolutely stunning, the renovations are fabulous and the rooms are outstanding. The view was picturesque. We stayed in the "honeymoon" suite and it was pure heaven! We had such a busy weekend, it was so peaceful to come back to their place in the afternoon to relax and sit by the water. It made the weekend very relaxing and enjoyable. We are thankful for such a great stay. The one "family" room had a limited view of the water and smaller windows, but the loft upstairs for kids was a great idea and really creative. The view from the other two rooms was super. There was alot of privacy, rooms were clean and it was very peaceful. The food was super and the company even better. It was so interesting to learn some history of the area and your community. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit with us and make us feel like family, not guests. We also enjoyed visiting with Emily and Montgomery (bassethounds), they were just way too cute. We hope to make it back out to stay with you again sometime in the future, and will highly recommend your B&B to all our friends and family. Thank you for a wonderful weekend. The envelope at the door to greet us when we arrived was really special, we felt like family, it gave us flexibilty with our schedule and make it feel like it was our home away from home for the weekend. As for the credit card, I was advised well in advance when we booked how we would be charged, and saw the charge coming through on our card as expected 10 days in advance. IT actaully worked out quite well b/c we were paying for our parent's rooms and were able to avoid the fuss over the bill at the end of the weekend. Those who were surprised by this should do better research before booking a place, and pay closer attention to their finances.

I found the accomodations to be fantastic, the upper suites give a wonder view of the ocean and the surrounding wildlife and were very well decorated and furnished. Our hosts were very hosptible and took excellent care of our needs, the breakfast was outstanding, I would highly recommend Birds of a Feather to anyone visiting Victoria, B.C.
