“A Cut Above”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

In the past 11 years we have visited Victoria several times. The first time we visited we stayed at the Harbour Towers, probably around 2002-03. We liked this property because, in addition to standard rooms, the hotel has rooms/suites where the living area is separate from the bedroom(s). This is always a nice option for families---adults can be in the living area with lights on and t.v./conversation while their children sleep. We've stayed in 1-bedroom, 2-bedroom and Penthouse suites at this property and have been please each time. The suites include kitchenettes as well. And the location? It's fantastic---walking distance to ferries, museums, Parliament building, Inner Harbor. We've never stayed anywhere else in Victoria. Why? If it's not broke, don't fix it.

We visited Victoria in December after about a 5 year hiatus and returned to Harbour Suites. The hotel has held up well although there are signs of aging that are unrelated to visual furnishings. The windows are not energy efficient (more below), as our recent stay revealed. Cranking up the heat where the baseboards are just beneath the drafty windows/doors cancels out conservation (however, I'm happy to report we reused our towels). Mattresses could be updated. They are showing signs of aging.

Despite the minor "cons" we will continue to stay at this property because the "pros" far outweigh. The staff is wonderful, the hotel is clean, a restaurant is on the premises (good food! no room service), the vicinity to Inner Harbor is terrific.

Side note: The weather was awful (extremely cold, -6c, and windy) which exposed the problem with the drafty windows..we could not get warm (we were on the 12th floor). The staff was nothing but helpful. The kind and attentive maintenance man tried his best to make us comfortable, bringing us two space heaters, but with temperatures that cold we couldn't get warm. After talking with other people I don't think all rooms had this problem during this period, but a few besides us did. I guess the best advice is don't stay on a high floor at this hotel when it is really cold!

Room Tip: The higher the floor, the better the view of course, but the longer the wait for an elevator during...

With much appreciation for your 4-star Review ... which I find especially valuable when reading that you have made the Harbour Towers your hotel of choice in Victoria each year for 11 years! It seems that you've experienced most of our numerous room types, and indeed those 2-bedroom suites are perfect for families. Please note that we have been replacing the mattresses in the guestrooms gradually each year, including the sofabeds this year.
Thank you for your recognition of those elements that we have within our control - clean with wonderful staff - who would always do their best to address any maintenance issues in your room, so never hesitate to contact the front desk and report them.
See you in year 12, we hope!
Sincerely,
Kay Koot, general manager

I stayed at this hotel for one night. The front desk staff was super friendly at check in and check out. Location was great; close to Legislature building. Room was a bit cold but with duvet in room, it was okay.

My husband and I try to spend a weekend in Victoria at least once a year. Finding a hotel that makes our 'get away' pleasurable can be sort of hit and miss. I happy to say that Harbour Towers is definitely a 'hit'.
We were in one of the suites and although we did not use the kitchenette to it's full capacity, I was very impressed by how well stocked it was with all the main necessities for cooking a meal.
The room itself was very clean and comfortable, complete with free wi-fi (good strong signal) and a lovely king size bed.The living area had an older TV unit, while the bedroom had a new large flat-screen; as we weren't there to watch TV, having the older one still up and running really wasn't a bother at all.
And the buffet breakfast that came with our package was impressive. There was such a variety of choices for breakfast, I can't think of anything that was missing, even the scrambled eggs were done correctly. Although the restaurant staff was kept busy clearing tables and seating customers, they were very pleasant and helpful.
We have already recommended this hotel to friends.

Thanks for your lovely 4-star Review! Reading that you've discovered the Harbour Towers and will now consider us your hotel of choice in Victoria and have already recommended us ... makes my day!
Choosing to stay in one of our many suites is definitely my recommendation, not only because of the kitchentte and king size bed, but also because of the 42" flatscreen tv in the bedroom. Since breakfast is included when reserving a suite, it seems clear that you're seeing the value of our buffet and happy to see that you consider it impressive.
Hoping to be welcoming you back when next on the Island,
sincerely,
Kay Koot, general manager

We recently stayed with our toddler, found the stay pleasant, and had nothing terrible to complain about. The bed was comfortable with nice sheets, the breakfast included the usual foods. Although we didn't use the kitchenette, it was nicely stocked with cooking and eating utensils. We enjoyed the pool and hot tub each day that we were there, and there were complimentary cookies each evening at the Reception Desk.

This was our first stay in this hotel and we enjoyed the location, ease of access to the downtown area, the museum and to the BC Legislature, which we could easily see all lit up at night from our 5th floor suite. We stayed two nights, had a good and reasonably priced dinner the first night, but the breakfast buffet was the best of its type that we have enjoyed, especially when compared to buffet breakfasts we had in Montreal and in San Marcos, Texas, which were the last two places we stayed where breakfast was included in the rates. Harbour Towers served up a wide choice of freshly prepared alternatives to suit any tastes and all overseen by an efficient and pleasant staff that went above and beyond despite almost every guest in the hotel arriving for breakfast at the same time. When did you last see the General Manager of a hotel bussing tables to ensure that tables were quickly prepared and ready for the next onslaught of hungry patrons. The whole staff of this place are doing a great job and made our stay very pleasant indeed. Yes some aspects of the hotel are a bit dated, but our rooms were very clean, well equipped and comfortable. The Wi-Fi worked flawlessly, the underground parking was very clean and well lit with easy access for registered guests but quite secure at night. We saw the manager talking with guests at 11:00PM on the day we arrived and she was working in the breakfast buffet when we went down at 8:00AM the next morning. This commitment obviously extends to the rest of the staff, Leading by example - well done. We will no doubt return next time we visit Victoria.

I just love to read those reviews by a guest who has just discovered our great hotel and now considers it their choice in Victoria. I especially enjoy reading (and then sharing with my Team) a comment which most favourably compares something such as our Breakfast Buffet and describes it as "the best you've enjoyed". Thank You!
I also much appreciate your recognition of my presence with some Back-To-Back shifts, giving me the opportunity to chat with our guests both in the evening as well as at breakfast.
We look forward to welcoming you back,

Found this hotel to be very comfortable. Front desk clerk was very pleasant and helpful. Upgraded us to a harbour view suite and explained the cost of one more night. Room had a kitchenette and appliances and dishes etc. were in good condition. Breakfast was included and lots to choose from. Any contact with staff was very friendly and helpful. Would recommend this hotel.

Thanks for your 4-star Review, and the additional positive comments.
I'm glad that the helpful front desk was able to upgrade you to one of our suites so that you could experience the benefits of the kitchenette. Our Food & Beverage team does take pride in our Breakfast Buffet and saying there is lots to choose from is very satisfying to Chef Dustin and his culinary team.
hoping we'll be welcoming you back,

A follow up to our review written in May 2012 about a stay in December 2011; basically, no real change. Management at Harbour Towers responded to our last review by saying that a "complete refurbishment" and a "brand new hotel product" were coming in 2012/2013. That has not happened. The mattresses have changed for the better and there is a nice flat panel TV in the master bedroom of the two bedroom suites, unfortunately the TV in the living room just had its 20th birthday. Not that it matters much because the cable signal is so poor, many of the channels are unwatchable. The furniture, lamps and fixtures haven't been updated in many years. Breakfast is now included when renting a suite, but it's not exactly "free." Our two bedroom suite over Christmas 2013, with an auto association discount cost $171 per night before tax. The same suite with same CAA discount over Christmas 2012 cost $144 per night before tax. The breakfast buffet is priced at $13 per person. Hmmm = $167. The two bedroom suites have kitchens. We would have preferred to keep the lower rate and eat cereal in our room in the morning. But, we may have an unnatural love for cereal.
There is good news, all the great things about Harbour Towers remain; awesome, friendly and helpful staff, especially. The hotel in general, Vic's (the restaurant), as well as the rooms are perfectly clean. The hotel's location and the views from most rooms; still excellent. Harbour Towers is still a good choice in Victoria, it's just overdue for a polishing.

Thank you for your review, and I'm happy to read that you were a returning guest, although I am sorry to read of the previous manager's promise not being met. I've been here since March 2013 and am proud to say that we have been upgrading a number of items considered in the "Furniture, Fixtures and Equpment" capital, including the SilverBirch Hotels & Resorts' standard 42" flatscreen televisions installed last year into the bedrooms of all our suites. My Team is working on how to best allocate our 2014 capital budget and I do hope that we may see you return, to check it out and again enjoy all those great things you highlighted: awesome, friendly staff and everything being clean.
Best regards,
