The hotel has a good location close to the Inner Harbour, parliament building and the museum in a quiet area. There is only a short walk to downtown Victoria. Therefore, we hoped to find a decent hotel but were left disappointed.
The hotel itself was a major disappointment, it's old, worn-out and needs a serious update (I read somewhere that the renovation is coming in 2013, I do hope so). The staff at the reception desk were friendly but likely understuffed because the check-in and check-out were really slow and we had a lot of people waiting and shaking their heads over the slow service. We stayed the first night in a 4th floor suite and woke up in the middle of the night to an annoying loud noise. It turned out there was a huge air-conditioning unit on the roof just outside the bedroom window. It was running on-off all night and sleeping was next to impossible. Also, the shower was not functioning well at all as the shower head was very low.
Next morning, we requested a new room and the friendly but busy lady in the reception desk promised to arrange a new room, full points to her for great customer service! We checked a potential new room in the 3rd floor but it turned out to be like our previous room with noisy air conditioning units just outside the windows. Seriously, nobody should stay on floors 3-5 because of these noisy air-conditioning units unless you are deaf and can't really hear anything. Also, the views from these rooms are very poor. We did not get any room straight away but were promised a new room once we came back later in the afternoon. We went out for a day and came back late in the evening to pleasently find out that indeed we had a new room waiting for us on the 7th floor. That room was a quiet one, which was great. Also, the shower was working well this time. However, the TVs on all these rooms were similar, old and had a really crappy picture. The breakfast of the hotel was very basic but nothing special. The annoying thing was that they had only 1 waffle maker to make waffles. You can imagine the line of people waiting, so you did not want to make waffles....
I have a hard time recommending this hotel to anybody. However, if you go, do not have your expectations high, you will likely be disappointed. Also, make sure you will not stay in floors 3-5 if you like to sleep.
