Best food in Victoria. Period. Healthy, locally-sourced, beautiful, accessibly prices, and, beyond anything - extremely delicious. The menu changes every day, and the chef is an absolute artist.

“Fresh Japanese food worth looking for”
Reviewed December 23, 2011

Daidoco was recommended to me by a seven-year-old friend of mine who loves the Victoria Bug Zoo (which is right across the way) and also loves miso soup. What a find! The menu changes every day depending on what is fresh and available. It is very Japanese but not at all kitschy; it looks and feels exactly like an unassuming restaurant of this kind in Japan would look and feel. I had a large bowl of delicious fish soup with fresh greens and tofu, which was the special of the day, for just eight dollars.

“Great Lunch - Get There Early”
Reviewed September 12, 2011

This Japanese restaurant uses all locally-grown and sourced organic produce, seafood, poultry and meat. There are great selections for all kinds of vegetarians. The daily special is always tasty and economical. The line starts forming about noon for the cafeteria-style ordering, and most people carry out.

There are about five or six tables in the dining area, close together enough that you wil be meeting new friends over lunch. There are two tables on warm days in the covered alley-way just outside the door for overflow. Another five or six spots to eat along the window bar on round stools makes a cozy deli-style environment.

Living in the NW of the USA gives me the opportrunity to eat at a lot of Japanese and other Asian restaurants. This tiny lunch cafe is truly a gem and would give a great introduction to Japanese food for those who have not sampled the simple, healthy preparation and beautiful presentation of Japanese home-style fare.

The salmon-don was a tasty noodle dish with fresh vegetables and a moderate-sized piece of troll-caught fresh Pacific salmon in a slightly sweet savory sauce. My salads were perfect, and soup days were special. I made sure to eat there all three days of my trip for a filling, but not overpowering lunch.

“downtown's best kept lunch only secret”
Reviewed April 30, 2010

You won't find traditional Japanese (ie. tempura) here. What you will find is the best quality Japanese style food, in a deli setting, using a lot of organic product from a farm in Metchosin. The concept is simple. Healthy, fresh food at the most reasonable price and fast. Stay or take out...you will have what you want in no time at all.
What I love about this place is that they are aware of their space. You walk in the door and you are greeted by the chef and/or his wife. I don't know the names of the couple that own this brilliant spot but there awareness to detail and simple things, like saying 'Hello' is appreciated.
I have been eating here for several years and love bringing any visitors here. The room is simple and tranquil. Love the quiet music. You can enjoy it if you are alone and it won't drown out a conversation if you are sharing food with someone. Order a few things. With price points from $1.25 to about $8 you create the meal you want. Decide to add on...go back to the counter and in minutes you have more. Can't eat everything you order (and that has happened) they're happy to pack it up for you. When was the last time you had lunch for 2 under $20 and couldn't eat it all?
Today I had a light lunch of a simple kale, soybean and creamy tofu salad with a couple of rice cakes. $5. for memorable food. When does that happen? No set menu here. It is always changing which means you are getting nothing but fresh food. When they sell out they close. Again a good sign...you know what you are getting is fresh.
The fact that chef noticed I was leaving today and said "Thank you', which always happens, is just another reason to love and support this couple. They appreciate your business. And I appreciate their love of food!
