Our tour was a shore excursion from an NCL ship. We met at the Victoria docks on a Friday afternoon, and quickly learned that it would not be a normal day. Due to demonstrations in downtown Victoria to protest worldwide global warming, there was traffic chaos and gridlock on all travel routes (a bit of irony in that, btw).
Our tour guide Janine - a super cool South African transplant who happens to look like Olivia Munn - led us on a wild walking tour across the city. We skirted the protests, waited forever for a water-taxi across to Chinatown, and dealt with a crazy Friday night chaos of beautiful weather, big crowds from three cruise ships docked at one time and the post-protest revelers along Government St through downtown and into St James bay area.
We stopped for cocktails and apps at Swan;s Brew Pub and ended the evening at Frankie's Modern Diner (with a big bowl of Balls...Meatballs). We lucked out with an excellent & chill group of 10 (all east coast folks) in the tour, led by Janine the queen - who called us the 'best tour group ever'. Along the way learned about Victoria's history and its journey from a rough and rumble port town to a modern and wonderful city.
I can't say enough good things about my experiences on this tour. Thanks to Janine (and to Emily, Janine's boss) for a great time.
