“Nice Ferrie ride”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

A very pleasant 2 and a half hour ride through mostly smooth waters. Thought they could have offered a senior discount like the company that ran from Anacortes to Sydney. Food was varied, fairly priced, and tasty.

“Easy, stress free, and beautiful!”
Reviewed October 24, 2013

My husband and I, and our two dogs took our first trip on the MV Coho last week. I didn't know what to expect with crossing the boarder with our car and dogs so I was pretty stressed out about it. It turned out to be a very easy and pleasant experience! Black Ball Ferry Line has this down to a science! We made a reservation online, so when we arrived we just paid our fee, showed our passports and were directed where to park. When it was time to load, Black Ball employees gave clear instructions to get us on the boat and parked properly. The whole process was very efficient and took no time at all. Once we were parked, we went up to the main deck and found comfy seats, some booths and outdoor seating as well. We left our dogs in the car so they wouldn't be scared, but next time I will bring them up to the inner cabin now that I know how comfortable it is. The ferry left on time and it was smooth sailing from there! As it was a beautiful sunny day, we spent much of our time outside checking out the boat, the islands and trying to see whales (we didn't). There is a cafeteria and duty free shop on the boat, but we didn't use those. When we were close to arriving in Victoria, we got in our cars and again, experienced the most efficient process to get everybody off the boat in an organized manor. I really thought the whole experience was great! Clean, comfortable, beautiful scenery, and great history on the MV Coho! We loved it!

“Great Way to Get to Victoria”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

This was my first time using this ferry. On previous visits to Victoria, I've gone on the Washington State ferries or BC ferries. The base for our vacation was Bremerton, so the Black Ball was a relatively quick way to get there. Nice ride over. On our trip, we saw several killer whales as we entered the Inner Harbor. Paperwork both ways. To Canada, passenger form and Canadian Declaration Card (the longest form, filled out on the way over); to USA, passenger form, and I believe declaration form. Brief interview by custom officers each way on entry. Bought a package through Black Ball (walk-on & hotel) and it worked out well. Ferry lands in a convenient location on the Victoria Inner Harbor (versus Tsawwassen for the BC Ferries which is many miles from Victoria). Several hotels very convenient to landing (within a couple blocks). 2 companies run buses out to Butchart Gardens from in front of the Empress. Cost a little more, but makes doing without a car possible. Left a rental car in Port Angeles, had to pay for parking. Walked an extra 1/2 block to get the cheaper, non-Black Ball affiliated parking.

“basic transport -come with low expectations”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

We took the ferry from Victoria to Port Angeles. The boat is old and and makes the newest BC ferries that operate between Victoria and Vancouver (for roughly the same ticket price) look like luxury liners. The seating is not comfortable. The only snack bar hardly has anything to choose from. The duty free shop was poorly stocked. Leaving Victoria, you need to be there at least 90 minutes ahead to go through customs. If you want to make a reservation it is a lot cheaper online vs by phone and cheaper if you reserve return rather book each one separately, This boat will get you there but has made me look at the big BC Ferries with new and surprising appreciation. Amazing!

“Safe and Reliable”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

For a no frills but safe and reliable trip from Victoria to the USA, we prefer the Coho rather than the BC Ferries. The Black Ball Ferry Line keep things simple, no frills but reliable so the prices stay reasonable. It is a treat to see Victoria from the water in one of many seats on the Coho Ferry. Recommended.
