Went with my friend and we had been anticipating going for some time. The gift shop had almost no items for sale which was disappointing. If you have mobility issues you can not attend this place seeing as there are stairs and levels everywhere, there is a beautiful antique elevator but am uncertain if it is just for show or can actually be used. Many boat and ship replicas, lots of reading. Disappointed there wasn't much of anything interactive to keep a young persons interest. My favorite part was the court area which, had nothing to do with the museum except for the fact that it was in the museum. Did it once to say I did it, would I do it again or recommend it, nah.

Fabulous place, could have spent longer looking at the varied displays. Friendly and engaging staff who clearly love their job and they are very welcoming. Great for children too, lots for them to do. Adults have lots to do too!

I like nautical history and knew from other TA reviews that I would enjoy my time in this small but information packed attraction. I did - it contains a melange of well presented exhibits, displays and models of people, places, events and vessels that have shaped the BC / Vancouver Island areas.

Displays are presented chronologically and flow well from 1st Nations, through discovery, disputed ownership, settlement, conflict, commerce right through to the advent of tourism. I found the 1893 advertising brochure for various cruises really interesting.

There is enough interactive content to keep the kids engaged. There are small areas on the Coast Guard and RC Navy that have the potential to be improved. One small suggestion is for more comprehensive information to be attached to some of the models on display.

Court house on 3rd level is okay (I work in the law so ho hum), but I absolutely enjoyed the trip back to the small ground floor gift store in the fabulous birdcage lift. Admission is reasonable at about $12 per adult.

Thoroughly recommended.

Fantastic informative little museum with a full display of maritime history of Vancouver island and BC. There's a pirate ship for kids to play on whilst the adults can roam around the nooks and crannies of this interesting place with history of exploration and captain cook, the gold rush and canneries. Its also a beautiful building and the original courthouse complete with a working 100 year old plus birdcage elevator and the original court room on the third floor which you can have endless fun with the kids role playing. We spent ages pretending to be the judge and courtroom assistant and then stand in the dock or be a juror. Kids under 12 are free entry and at only 12 CAD for adults was a lovely place to spend for a couple of hours. Highly recommend it

Though born & raised in B.C., we were amazed at the breadth of detailed historical information. Stories abound about both current and past activities, ship building, whaling and fishing, and shipwrecks. Includes many models for the kids.
