“Beautiful gardens you can visit for free!”
Reviewed August 19, 2013

This was right across the street from the B&B we stayed at and was fun to walk around in. It would be a perfect place to picnic or let your kids run around. The best part, it was free!

“Nice grounds”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

The building is not very appealing but the gardens are pleasant and there are many historic residences on the surrounding streets if you like charming architecture.

“Beautiful gardens, FREE, very well cared for!”
Reviewed August 15, 2013 via mobile

You cannot enter the building.
Pathways and gardens around the main building are beautiful. It's quite amazing that the people who care for them are mostly retired volunteers.
Don't miss the rose garden to the right as you come through the gates - it's behind it's own gates - go inside.

A good option to pair with beacon hill if you want free gardens instead of 30$/pp at other gardens in town.

Enjoy!

“Makes me want to be Lieutenant Governor”
Reviewed August 10, 2013

The gardens are nothing short of brilliant. Around every turn, you're immersed in a different garden style, with a different vista. There's everything from a formal English rose garden to a wild Garry Oak ecosystem. They way that native species and ecosystems complement the carefully structured and manicured gardens, I think, makes this one of the best gardens in Victoria.

“A must see if you visit Victoria and like gardens and history!”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

Government House located in the Rockland neighborhood of Victoria is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of BC. The present building was built in 1957 and is the 4th building and home of the LG. The gardens are wonderful and are maintained by hundreds of volunteers. Tuesdays and thursdays the grounds are active with volunteers tending to all the various gardens including the rose garden, alpine garden, cut flower garden, veggie garden and more. Also on the grounds the late 1800 stables and gardener cottage have been restored and now house a terrific costume museum, heraldry display, interpretive centre and a lovely tea room. The grounds are open to the public daily and the tea room is open from may to early sept serving tea and light lunch. Checking the website the governement house will let you see other activities that occur as well as times that the house is open for tours.
