We stayed only one night here during our stop in Victoria. The hotel is close to downtown and in an erea with shops, restaurants etc. We had a large suite: downstairs livingroom, kitchen and bathroom. Here is also the foldaway bed/couch. Upstairs are two bedrooms: one with a queen size bed and one with two singles. The suite was clean and well equiped. The only downside that I can think of was the temperature: since it was very hot for May the room was very warm. There is no AC and you have to cool the suite with fans.

Room Tip: There is a public bar in the hotel. Our room was far away from all the noise (band playing) but if y...

To keep it short...

-clean room, quite spacious - I had one of the smallest suites and this was still the case.
-well-equipped kitchen
-bathroom - clean and updated
-good location, downtown, near restaurants and shops, harbour, museum....yet quiet
-very reasonable price, great value for $
-good TV and reliable internet access - should these be important for you
-great room cleaning and front desk service - nice people, helpful and friendly
-comfortable bed

if and when I get back to Victoria (hopefully soon), I will stay here.

Swans is tucked away from the waterfront, but close to everything, just inside of Chinatown. Walk everywhere. Parking is not cheap. We took the Victoria Clipper in from Seattle and got a cab to out hotel ($7.50). It's not a chain hotel and the rooms are nice, with high open beam wood exposed ceilings. Spacious with a kitchenette , if you don't want to eat out all the time, (but the food in the city is amazing!). The university owns the hotel, which sports one of the most popular brew pubs in town, with a band playing every night. The reviews warned not to stay above the bar, due to the party below, but be aware of the street noise as well when you get your room. If you like to sleep with the windows opened it can get loud. Lines can form around the building on certain nights, and later on the revelers can get boisterous out there. The comfy bed is up a long flight of stairs in the loft upstairs from your living room. We have a great view of the drawbridge and partially the harbor. All in all this was a good decision. We will be back.

Our only complaint with the hotel is the lack of parking. It is $10 a day extra to park at a lot 1 block away. No bell staff. no luggage carts. There are only two spots for a car to unload next to the hotel and when we arrived at 7 pm, both were taken by the band that was setting up to play in the hotel's pub. By the time we got to the pub for dinner, it was nearly 8:00 pm and it was packed, seat yourself. It took an hour to get our food. The food was great, but the place was noisy. Our room was great. We had a king bed in a loft above the main area. Our only complaint is the skylight which lets way too much light in when you want to sleep in. The front desk staff were helpful. Free wi-fi but on the weekend, the pub does not open for breakfast until 9 am. Just plan accordingly if you are an early riser. I think we may be back. Loved the full kitchen but not the tiny bathroom-type coffee pot. The hotel is right on the edge of china town. My husband was not comfortable with me walking the streets in the area alone at night.. Lots of street life. The hotel does not have a swimming pool, hot tub, fitness center or gift shop.

Room Tip: Request a room without a skylight if you want to sleep in. If you want quiet, don't get a room...

Not being part of a chain, Swans is easily and often overlooked. In my books, it's one of the better places to stay on Vancouver island. The rooms are huge, well kept and each has its own character due to the fact that the hotel has one of the best private art collections to be found outside of a museum. If that's not enough, there's a great brewery on site and live music most evenings in the lounge (where the some of the most impressive art pieces are housed). Great coffee shops (Bean Around the World & Habit), breakfast joints (Mole & Jam), and dinner options (Brasserie L'ecole) are all within 2 blocks. Rooms directly above the pub/resto should be avoided, unless you are a very solid sleeper, or are keen to stay in the pub till it closes. Rooms that face out towards the street and water are by far the best, especially the two level one on the upper floor. Guest service is limited, but completely adequate. If you are looking for a unique stay, this hotel is well worth a visit

I recently had a long term stay here and found this to be a lovely, charming hotel with incredible character.

My one bedroom suite was huge and gorgeous, with two storey ceilings, a large living/dining area, small kitchen and good bedroom. The kitchen was aged but still sufficient for my purposes. I also had a small patio out back. The only downside was that the walls are a little thin. That said, I had no issues with sleeping or otherwise being comfortable.

The building itself is gorgeous. There is a large restaurant with a good menu and an amazing collection of beers, many of which are made on site. They also have a small liquor store which sells a lot of their beers. Perhaps the best thing about this place is the live music every night.

The hotel is located on the edge of downtown Victoria so requires some walking to go some places. Nonetheless, the neighbourhood is very interesting with plenty of restaurants, shopping and sightseeing. Chinatown is also just around the corner.

If you have ever stayed in a hotel for more than a week you know the feeling of being cooped up or going stir crazy. That does not happen here! I truly felt like I was 'home' in my suite.

Free WiFi is a bonus.

Overall this is a superb property with lots of charm and interesting features. I would not hesitate to recommend it.

We did a girlfriend getaway and chose the Swans based on our Internet search: we were looking for a convenient downtown location, fair price and clean hotel with some character. We found it in the Swans. Live jazz band downstairs in their brewpub with locally made beer was also a draw. Chinatown and Government Street are right around the corner. The staff were friendly. Our room had a small kitchenette and a loft bedroom. The bed was extremely comfortable: this was a huge surprise and a rare find for the price we paid! We could tell it had been renovated recently yet still maintained its historical tone. The only thing we didn't like, which wasn't the fault of the Swans Hotel, was nearby construction noises wakening us in the morning. The neighbourhood reminded us of England or parts of Montreal. You won't be disappointed with The Swans!

Room Tip: You can request a room that's not overtop of the brewpub so that it's quiet. You can also...
