Really enjoy going to Imax and experiencing the 3D effect of the Documentaries. Wonderfully done each one and good stories behind them. Vivid colors.

“Nothing special about their IMAX”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

I just wasn't all that impressed. The movie we saw (the Last Reef) seemed older, and theater was mildly run down and I noted a couple small holes in the screen early on that drove me NUTS!!

Dear guest,
Thank you for taking the time to relay your impressions after your recent visit. We take all comments seriously as they allow us to reflect on our operation and make improvements to the experience we offer where we can.

The note about a hole in the screen sent us scrambling, but upon close inspection the screen is undamaged. It's possible it was a fleck of dirt on the lens which projected and stayed on the screen. If that's the case, we certainly apologise because it's our responsibility to check the screen during the running of the feature to makes sure the image is as clean as possible.

Lastly, for your interest, The Last Reef was released in February, 2012 but we weren't able to place into the schedule until October 2012. In September last year at a giant screen cinema conference it top honours in two categories; best original score and best sound design. It will rejoin the schedule after our 2013 Film Festival ends on Feb. 28, 2013.

Kindest regards,
Paul Wild

Thank you for your kind comments and at the risk of sounding bias - I agree!

SKYFALL has been a hit throughout the world and on the giant screen here too. We have enjoyed presenting this specially formatted IMAX version and we will continue to play it at 7pm on Friday and Saturday nights until Feb. 23, 2013.

Next up... The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opening March 1, 2013!

Kindest regards,

“Like any other IMAX, but poor film selection”
Reviewed December 28, 2012

It is an IMAX screen, seen one, seen them all. Personally, I prefer the domed IMAX screens, such as can be found in the Telus World of Science in Vancouver, the Science Centre and Ontario Place in Toronto.

The one gripe I have is the movie selection was very poor. We ended up watching the 'Last Reef' which was quite bad. When I compare the selection to what is currently running at the venues I mentioned above, I find it to be lacking. I don't know if this was simply a coincidence, or it was because they generally select movies that are cheaper to run.

Thank you for your comments.

We're sorry to learn you didn't enjoy The Last Reef during your recent visit. We also appreciate that some people prefer a dome screen vs. the giant flat screen - 18.6m high x 25.9m wide (61' x 85') in our case.

We take pride in best efforts to offer a variety of films. Currently we're offering four documentary films (including The Last Reef) and a full length feature (Skyfall) in the evenings. Our colleagues at Science World in Vancouver, by comparison, only have two films on the schedule.

In addition, we're opening the 2013 IMAX Victoria Film festival on January 18th and for 6 weeks we'll add 6 more classic IMAX films to this year's program.

We look forward to continuing to update our film schedule as the year unfolds and hope that we'll have another opportunity to host you on your next visit to Victoria.

Kindest regards,
Paul Wild

“State of the art 10 years ago”
Reviewed December 20, 2012

We saw a nice program from National Geographic. The theater was probably designed about 10 years ago and needs an update. It is definitely not state of the art. Dirt could be seen on the film when projected. It is an OK way to spend a rainy day in December in Victoria, but there are better things to do.

Thank you for taking the time to post some comments.

I regret to learn that you didn't enjoy your experience to the fullest. You are correct, the theatre opened in June 1998 and we celebrated our 14th anniversary earlier this year.

We are very proud of our technology and overall experience, but as you rightly pointed out running 70mm film stock through a giant projector can be at times perilous when it comes to keeping the screen clean. We do keep an eye on the films during exhibition to make sure the screen is as clean as can be for the viewers enjoyment, however, the occasional film can run 'dirtier" than others depending on it's age or number of passes and at times can be difficult to maintain.
Please be assurred that we constantly monitor this situation and may even pull a film from the schedule or get another one if we can't it manage it properly for the viewers.
As an aside, as we look to the future to convert to a digital system, on-screen dirt will become a thing of the past.
Kindest regards,
Paul Wild
