Owner description: Completed in 1890, Craigdarroch is a stately home built by the pioneering couple Robert and Joan Dunsmuir, who at the time of its construction were the wealthiest people in British Columbia. Called a 'castle' due to its imposing exterior, the luxurious interior has been restored to look as though the visitor is a guest of Mrs. Dunsmuir during the 1890s. It features beautiful woodwork, unique Victorian artifacts, and an impressive collection of original stained glass, all within a pleasant walk from downtown Victoria.

Castle....really....it is a flash old home and I am aghast at the efforts to try and restore it....without upsetting the local sentiment....this didn't do it for me.....the gardens and outside are good and you don't need to pay an entrance fee. We had a group of people in front of us who refused to go in when they heard the entry price, if they lowered it down to $5 a person, there will be a lot more visitors.

The architecture and rooms were magnificent and the guides were delightful and knowledgeable. It would be nice if the whole castle was complete though.

The castle wasn't huge but was 4 stories high and every room and passageway was full of antiques, furniture and relics of it's time. A good couple of hours can be spent here and the staff are always free to answer any questions. A great variety of goods are available for purchase in the gift shop. The staff in here were also vey helpful in directing us on our walk back to the waterfront on the most scenic route

After lunch in Chinatown we decided to walk to the Craigdarroch Castle to check it out. Be warned, it's not a quick walk. If you aren't used to walking, I suggest finding some transportation if you don't have a rental car. We were in town on an unexpected, extended stay as a port call for our cruise ship.

The castle is beautiful. You can do a self guided tour or join a guided tour. They are very specific about what you can touch and can't . When you first enter/pay you get a briefing about what path to take, what to touch and not, where the bathrooms are, etc. Photography is allowed which was surprising to me. Each room has historical info that tells you what the room was used for, who used it, etc. The home was used as a hospital at one time as well so there is some interesting history there.

Definitely worth the visit and time.

The castle is still in the midst of a massive renovation. It is open to the public, and is a self-guided tour up four floors and then down four floors. The educational material that is posted in each room is unintentionally tragic, as you come to find out the fate of the original family, but the effort and care that the historical society has put into the home is impressive.
