The Inn is like the home of a great aunt who has gone on vacation, leaving her very competent butler in charge. The manager was extremely helpful in arranging activities and dinner reservations, and found two white Daimler limos for a birthday celebration.

It does not have all the services of the large hotels around the harbor, but nor does it have 175 float planes a day taking off outside your window. The neighborhood is a 5-10 minute walk from the harbor, but is quiet enough at night to sleep with the windows open.

It compares favorably with Relais and Chateau places at which I have stayed.

Things have changed so much for the worse at the Beaconsfield that I had to ask "When was the change of ownership?" and the answer was, sadly, "April 2003."

This is NOT the Beaconsfield that is so well reviewed in the travel guides. It is the same building, of course, but gone are many of the little details that made this place so special in the past. It is rather a sad thing to go downstairs, where all of the old reviews are still posted, and compare it to your experience.

The daily tea is now Stash tea; nothing special. Gone are the chocolates/champagne that waited in your room. They no longer do breakfast in bed, etc. although the breakfast is still pretty good.

Now, I fear, it is an overpriced Victoria B&B, albeit one still with a great location. We were disappointed that they are coasting on their previously earned reputation, and won't be back again.
