We stayed at the Empress hotel for 2 nights on our fly drive holiday.. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful and the room was great with a Harbor view(on arrival we had been upgraded to a junior suite. i would have been happy to have stayed in this Hotel for a longer break and would be very happy to stay here again...The hotel is in a great location. we had dinner in the Hotel Restaurant on our last night and the food and service was excellent.i would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Victoria. I would be happy to stay at this hotel again.

Large rambling hotel seems a bit disjointed but each area has some history and beautiful rooms. Loved the Bengal lounge. Checking in early caused a couple glitches but it all worked out. We ended up in conference parking due to bicycles so didn't use vallate parking but still is a fee. Remember to bring your wallet :) Loved the location too. Nice to stroll around the waterfront and china town. All in all we felt special and enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: Be specific to the type of room you would like. We had 6th floor abbey type room. Quite unique. No...

We stayed 4 nights at The Fairmont Empress in Victoria. The service was excellent and the views were spectacular from our harbor room. I would really recommend using the concierge at the Fairmont to book any excursions. Deborah was wonderful in offering different options from bus trips to suggesting the picnic basket at Buchard Gardens (which I highly recommend). She even arranged a golf trip for us that provided transportation and club rentals. The fine dining dinner service was parallel with the hotel service - excellent!

Room Tip: The only reason I rated sleep quality as "very good" was because of no air conditioning...

I have stayed at the Empress dozens of times, most recently for a five night stay in early August, 2012. Check in was done on line and I simply picked up a key from the doorman - it literally took 30 seconds. Our room was beautiful and ready early, as requested. The hotel personnel were 100% professional and completely accomodating. The location, setting and facilities are all top notch. This is the place to stay in Victoria.

The hotel was a wonderful place to stay. The location excellent! The staff were all very kind and
helpful, we even had a staff member show us some areas that were not open, but were great to look at.
A beautiful ballroom and a lounge/restaurant which was closed until the evening, both had many
interesting furnishings and pictures and antiques to view. We have stayed in other more modern hotels in Victoria, but the Empress was deffinitely on our to do list. Thanks for the wonderful experience!

Room Tip: Wander the Halls on a higher floor and get some additional views of Victoria.

The hotel is a landmark for Victoria, so we decided to stay there for our anniversary trip. Our room was small, with a confusing floor layout to get from the elevator to our room. We felt the hotel lacked the luxury and sophistication we would expect from the Fairmont brand and the history of the hotel. We went during a heat wave, which is a little odd for the Pacific Northwest but our room had no air conditioning. We had dinner at the hotel which was nice, but a llttle pricy. Additional we had a couples massage at Willows Stream Spa. The facilities were nice and the treatment was respectable, but again over priced compared to other places we have been. (Grand Wailea, 10,000 Waves Santa Fe, The Bellagio, The Springs Resort & Spa Costa Rica, etc.) In conclusion, I think I would have been satisfied viewing it from the outside and staying somewhere else.

While beautiful in terms of the history and architecture, this hotel is really not what we expected. When paying a premium price, we expect premium service, and you do not get this at The Empress. I have received better service at a Motel 6. We had to wait for our room and when we finally got to our room, the bellman literally stood with his held out waiting for a tip for bringing up our bags which had been stored while we went sight-seeing while waiting for our room to be ready. The staff was not overly friendly or helpful, and other than the doorman no one was rude, they were just plain average. Again, when paying a premium price, I would expect superior customer service. I agree with other reviewers in that the rooms were small and not air-conditioned and nothing fancy. The furniture in our room was actually quite worn. The restaurant was very expensive for average food. The only great thing about the hotel was the location, but this would not be enough for us to return. Bottom line, it's not worth the price.

Room Tip: Make sure your room doesn't overlook the loading dock & garbage area!
