Owner description: Kayaking is the best way to see Victoria. We specialize in safe, fun and educational kayak tours of Victoria's Harbour and waterfront. Our floating location at Fisherman's Wharf is a 10 minute walk from the cruise ship terminal and 20 minutes from downtown on the scenic boardwalk. We are the closest kayak shop to the Juan de Fuca straight, so when conditions allow, we will paddle along the coast to the kelp forests and an island the harbour seals frequent. Along the way we may see different shore birds like eagles, osprey, oystercatchers, cormorants, and the great blue heron. Starfish, jelly fish and kelp crabs are usually hiding just below the surface. Kayaking is easy and we make it easier by offering paddling jackets, gloves and a bottle of water. Plus on our kayak launch you won't even get your feet wet!

“great tour of the bay!”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

i thoroughly enjoyed my kayak tour of the bay in victoria, guided by katharine. the whole event was extremely well organized all safety measures were well explained to the group before heading out. katharine took the time to get to know each of us by name and took genuine interest in everyone. i was there by myself but quickly felt as though i was part of the group, mostly thanks to katharine who took the time to introduce me to everyone and promote interaction amongst everyone on the tour. she and brad got us geared up and out on the water for a little warm up before katharine guided us across the bay and over to see the seals. she was very knowledgeable about marine life in the bay and led an interactive and educational tour, well suited to people of all ages and kayak skill levels. highly recommended!

Thank you for your recommendation. On the day you visited we were fortunate to have ideal conditions and we were able to kayak out of the inner harbour and visit an area the seals frequent. Don't let travelling by yourself prevent you from taking advantage of our exciting tours. We keep our group size small, 8 maximum, to ensure everyone's enjoyment and to reduce our impact on the seals we visit. At Kelp Reef Adventures you will arrive as our guest and leave as part of our paddling family.

We welcome beginner and experienced paddlers alike. We provide instruction in both kayak safety and wildlife narrative. We have a wide variety of tours, some designed with children in mind, as well as longer tours for more energetic kayakers. Check us out at kelpreef.com.

“Great trip out”
Reviewed September 18, 2013

Excellent kayak trip out in fantastic conditions with Kevin from Kelp Reef Adventures. Kevin guided us across the bay over to the Navy yard and the reefs where the seals were, gave us plenty of opportunities for photos as well as imparted some of his knowledge of the seals and the local kelp forests. He even gave us a short musical interlude with a horn fashioned from a kelp stem. Their location on Fisherman's Wharf is well supplied with toilets and food options. Good equipment provided, well instructed - highly recommended! Thanks

Our location over the water at Fisherman's Wharf is idealy situated for a short paddle outside the harbour to the kelp forests and wildlife. It is a floating dock facility with lots of funky houseboats to explore and plenty of places to eat. There are activities like feeding the seals, whale watching, pirate adventures or just getting an ice cream and sitting in Fisherman's Wharf park. Check out the seal cam online.
I'm pleased to hear you had a great tour with Kevin. Fantastic conditions, an easy paddle to see the seals and Victoria's sights. . . i can't imagine a better way to spend the afternoon!

“Great day on the water!”
Reviewed September 17, 2013

We had a wonderful 2-hour paddle with Kelp Reef. There were only 4 people in our group, so it was the perfect size to get around the water without feeling like a big pack of tourists. Our guide was great and knowledgeable about the area and the wildlife. He got us in really close to some starfish, sea otters, and lots of seals. I anticipated it to be a lot of work, but it was actually a very relaxing paddle and was the perfect pace for us. You are outfitted with everything you need to be comfortable: waterproof jacket, skirt, water bottle, dry bags, etc. This was our last port on a 7-day Alaska cruise and this activity made it our favorite port!

The put-in is right in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf, so there is food, bathrooms, and they let you store your extra things in their booth while you paddle if you need to. We came back and enjoyed a nice dinner and waterfront walk on the town.

Fishermans' Wharf is a 10 minute walk from the cruise ship terminal and another 20 minutes puts you downtown. We offer 2 hour tours daily during the summer @ 1pm, 4pm and 7pm giving you a chance for some adventure while leaving you time for shopping or exploring downtown. Our tours are the best way to see Victoria, our groups are small and we take a relaxing pace. We provide all the necessary gear; spray skirts, jackets, gloves, dry bags for cameras and drinking water. Plus we have excellent guides to teach you all about our west coast marine ecosystem!

“Beautiful day on the water”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

Top notch establishment. Katharine was our guide, and she did a great job (along with her husband Brad) at making things light, easy, and fun. She was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer any and all questions, from ferry schedules to the real estate market (and of course, wildlife). Katharine even offered my wife and I advice on where to hike in the area. Will recommend to any and all people interested.

Thank you so much for your review. I try to know a little about a lot of things! There really is so much to do in Victoria and we are happy to share good tips from where to eat to hike or bike ride. Kayaking of course is the best way to see Victoria and our tours balance adventure with education! We'd love to hear from you when you next visit Victoria.

“thank you Brad”
Reviewed September 12, 2013

I had a wonderful time. Brad was very patient with my first time efforts at kayaking. It was exciting to see the seals, marine birds and experience the joys of the ocean. I would highly recommend making a reservation with Kelp Reef Adventures. Small local company but big hearts and WONDERFUL people.
thanks so much

You are welcome! Thanks for your review. The ocean has a powerful effect on people. Moving silently across the water in a kayak allows you to feel a connection to your environment. Rising and falling with the tide you feel the pull of the moon. Kayaking can reduce stress, help overcome greif and invigorate your blood with endorphins. Beginners are welcome!
