We booked the Discovery Island kayak tour originating out of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel during our stay at the hotel. We were not disappointed thank you Ocean River Sports. Tom and Jennaka were excellent guides, very knowledgable of the island history and above all, our safety was top priority. Tom and Jennaka handled the 9 tourists with ease. When we arrived at Discovery Island we were schooled in kayak operation and safety. We quickly started our tour around the island, the weather was a little overcast with little to no wind. Jennaka continued to give us kayak paddling tips as well as island and ocean animal history while Tom made sure no one was left behind.
After a few hours of light paddling we went to shore for a delicious lunch that was picked up from Kate's Cafe in the Oak Bay Beach Hotel. After lunch we continued paddling around the island while Jennaka continued pointing out all the marine life and numerous species of birds. Once we completed our kayak portion of the tour we beached the kayaks and went on a walking tour of the light house.
Jennaka provided history on the light house operation and operators including Ann the rum runner.
We were returned back to the dock at Oak Bay Beach hotel totally satisfied with a greater appreciation of Discovery Island.
It would have been an excellent trip if we were told where to meet in the morning, to bring drinking water and water shoes.
