The guides at Ocean River Adventures are first class! They are professional, knowledgeable, and above all sincerely care about your experience! They are passionate about kayaking and possess a superb knowledge and experience of the sport that they are super excited to share with you. What made the difference for me is that despite the incredible experience these guides have, they still understood and remembered what it was like to be a 'newbie' in the sport. They cared that much about the quality of my experience! I will be back for more. I am so hooked on kayaking now!!!

This daylong kayak tour was lead by a very skilled and thoughtful guide. We got to experience ocean kayaking, see a bit of coastline, wildlife, and local parks all the while feeling confident that we would be safe from currents and wind conditions. The guide taught us a lot about kayaking too. The nifty price included all gear. All we did was bring our lunch, smiles, and some paddling energy. Highly recommended.

We had a booked a custom costal tour with our own guide. Jordie was professional but so friendly and took great care to tailor the whole day trip to our ability and the conditions on the water. His lunch time spread was was superbly presented and very healthy. A first class opperation that puts the clients first

I'm a Victoria Harbour Paddler who enjoys paddling performance Outrigger canoes and have paddled from the Ocean River Paddling Club dock for 8 years...
Ocean River Sports gave me my first sea kayak lessons. Dusty and Jeanette got me going on a 3 hour introductory course. I still recall the "zen" of paddling back to the dock alongside the shore and saying "what stroke do I chose now?" as I paddled in spaces a 45 ft OC 6 couldn't go...

My wife and I had a day in Victoria BC as part of a Celebrity Mercury cruise from Seattle. Rather than book a shore excursion onboard, we decided to take an independent kayak trip. Based on a recommendation from a kayak club member I selected Ocean River Sports as a source of kayak rental. They are located at 1824 Store St., just north of the Johnson St. Bridge (http://www.oceanriver.com/). The staff was friendly and helpful and we had a great rental experience.

We arrived in Victoria to gray skies that turned into a gentle rain. The cruise port is a fair walk from the downtown area, about 30 minutes, so we took the $6/day shuttle bus. The shuttle dropped us off about a half mile from the Ocean River store. As in Seattle, the proprietors seemed surprised that we wanted to paddle in the rain. But that was our only day in Victoria so it was paddle in the rain or not paddle.

The store is adjacent to a dock where they store a few dozen boats. They carry several Current Design boats; I selected the Gulfstream (with skeg) and Sharon took a Solstice GT (with rudder). Rentals are $25 CAD for 2 hours or $40 CAD per day. They accept credit cards.

We were given a map of the two harbors and warned to watch for the two hazard in the Inner Harbour: the small ferrys that zip around and the floatplanes that frequently take off and land. As experienced kayakers we were allowed to leave the harbor into the ocean but we elected to stay within the harbors during this trip.

The kayak shop is just north of the Johnson St. Bridge. This bridge separates the (northern) Upper Harbour from the Inner Harbour. We began heading north into the Upper Harbour. This part of the harbor starts out very industrial but becomes residential after about a mile. We paddled until we approached the third bridge over the water. We had been warned that the narrows under this bridge have a very strong tidal current, occasionally 5 knots, and it was suggested that we not go further than this. So we turned around here and paddled back slowly past many of the fine harborside homes.

The rain stopped as we paddled past our put-in, then under the Johnson St. Bridge into the Inner Harbour. This is the part of Victoria that you often see in photos. We paddled up the north side of the harbor until we could see the Mercury docked at Ogden Point. We took a few photos, then quickly zipped across the harbor to explore the southern shore.

Our overall paddle took us just over 7 miles that we completed in just over 2 hours (no issue of missing the 2-hour rental window). This is a very pleasant and scenic place to paddle. Many cruise itineraries offer kayaking as a shore excursion. In Victoria it is easy to arrange your own paddle.
