Samurai's a great local (Vancouver West End, "Davie Village") source of authentic Japanese food. The owners, the staff (except for one tall white guy :-) are all Japanese. The portions are ample and reasonably priced. I only mention this ethic aspect because a lot of Japenese restaurants are run by other Canadian-Asian ethnicities and I find the food seldom as authentic as "natives'".
I see one review here suggesting that the sushi was not fresh. I order the "Large Assorted Sushi" plate almost every time I visit, and I've never been disappointed by the quality of the fish.
Special recommendation: they often offer bento boxes at lunch time that include soup, teriyaki rice and other stuff as well - for about eight bucks. Just average, you might think, but you can easily feed two people - and I'm one of those people who is hungry enough to "not want to share".
I try all the local joints - there are probably 10 Asian restaurants within two blocks -- but keep coming back to Samurai.
One more thing? This restaurant isn't flashy. It isn't even particularly attractive (there's a nice new shiny Asian place across the street if that's what you're looking for). But it's homey and has good food. I can't ask for more.
