Guu on Thurlow Street, next to Vancouver's trendy Robson Street shopping district, has become a regular favourite of ours. It's an inexpensive, fun, noisy, yet delicious pub-style Japanese restaurant, popular with Japanese students and ex-pats. Guu is authentic Japanese; the staff are all Japanese, in contrast with many of the sushi joints in the city. They greet you with a loud welcome in Japanese, and a loud "thank you" when you leave. The food is mostly grilled, fried or raw. No rolls here. My particular favourite is the Yaki Udon noodles, as well as the Japanese style calimari. Service is fast and always cheerful.
We've recommended Guu to many visitors, and they haven't been disappointed.

You'll be greeted with a loud welcome from the staff as soon as you're shown to your seats, but don't expect that to be for half an hour or more as seating is limited and this place is popular with the 20- and 30- something local crowd. The food choices are varied and are both small enough in portion size and cheap enough in price that a couple can order three or four (or more) dishes amongst themselves to share. Even a picky and mot-very-adventurous eater will find a couple or few things on the menu. I recommend a three- or five-kind sashimi sampler! Also they have very reasonably priced Japanese beer on tap. As for the atmosphere that is both the strength and weakness of this place. You'll either love the energy as the staff shout out orders, or you may find yourself his hating he noise. Either way if you're local and haven't been it's definitely worth coming to try it once (or more, if you like it) or if you're from out of town (or entertaining an out of town guest) and have a craving for Japanese tapas with the experience I mentioned above, then come on down. Just be warned that given the location parking is a bit of a struggle, but with he Sapporo flowing as freely as it does maybe public transit isn't such a bad idea anyway.

After reading other recommendations, I thought that I would try this after work on a wet cold evening.
I went as they opened at 5:30pm, which was good because by 6pm it was full.
Simple formula - lots of "Japanese Tapas" plates of food, small enough so that 3 or 4 make a dinner, and reasonably priced beer (Sapporo $5 a handle).
Site at the bar along the kitchen and watch dishes being prepared.
Quick service, very cheerful atmosphere (what is it about every staff member repeating the name of the dish in a sing-song shout as the chef hands it to the wait staff?) .
Not the place for a lingering romantic dinner, but good fun and good food. $28 for 3 dishes and a beer.

Taken by my host in the city who eats here often. Am a veggie so wasnt expecting much, but really enjoyed the veggie dishes. The staff are fun & seem to love working there. It's a noisy place to eat, but that added to the atmosphere.

Hard to imagine, but true. Lots of noise. Populated by 20-somethings. Small dishes at reasonable prices $$. Eclectic menu, hardly Japanese, but imaginative. Some dishes did not work for me, but the others in my party said it was me, not the dishes. The servers yelled at each other - part of the ambience, I guess. Location on Water Street in Gastown. A destination for young locals. Very, very busy.
