“Excellent Sushi!”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Can't wait to come back here. It lived up to the expectations. Can understand why people rate this place high. The sushi and rolls were so good. It melts in your mouth as good sushi does! Enjoyed the selections of green tea. The service was good. The price is reasonable (especially after eating at Sushi Yasuda in NYC!). Would recommend this place to others.

“Overrated ”
Reviewed July 16, 2014 via mobile

Went there because local reviews said it is the best in Vancouver. However, it turned out to be above average only, or may be the Japanese foods in Vancouver are not as good as the old days if this is already the best in town.
There were couple of good dishes like the uni shooter, signature tuna sushi roll, tempura shrimp. On the other hand, quality of the sashimi is just average (if you are expecting high quality sashimi). The snapper even had a muddy taste, something that you won't expect from good quality sashimi. The anglerfish liver does not look nice, and my friend said because that is canned stuff, not from fresh fish.

“Move over Tojo !”
Reviewed June 4, 2014

Hidden away in leafy West Point Grey is one of the best Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. Not just another sushi joint, Zest is a true gourmet take on Japanese food. Innovative dishes superbly executed. Quiet and professional service. With a genius in the kitchen, this restaurant is what Tojo's purports to be.

“A Culinary "David"”
Reviewed May 22, 2014

When my husband and I heard that this restaurant in our neighbourhood (which we had just moved to ) upstaged the most famous Japanese restaurant/sushi place in Vancouver and won a coveted culinary award, we were there in a heartbeat. Zest has been in it's current location for about 10 years now, open only for dinner. It is an understated, relaxed dining place which serves Japanese favourites which they creatively tweak to make it their own. I am a big fan of katsu, and have tried the authentic ones in Tokyo, so I opted for this. It was a treat. It was a "gourmet katsu"- lightly crisped and paired with fresh, delicate watercress salad. Writing about it makes me want to head back! We also enjoyed the grilled sablefish and the 4 kinds of sashimi- there is no need to add more soy sauce. Enjoy them as they are served. They are already lightly dressed with special soy sauce- seaweed, jalapeño...that fills every bite with flavour. Fantastic with champagne. Thumbs up, too for warm and efficient service. Made reservations to try the other dishes this week.

“Tantalize Your Tastbuds”
Reviewed April 11, 2014

We were in town for just two days and lucked out when we picked this place. It's in a very unassuming, residential part of town, tucked away in a corner of a strip mall. Little to no parking but we got there early. White tablecloths, modern decor, tasteful designs, clean and elegant. The menu has all the standards plus specials that change daily. The chefs create some amazing dishes, using combinations that don't sound appetizing but will tantalize your tastebuds!

My husband had some fresh sushi and, yes, it was very fresh. I opted for a special halibut roll wrapped in prosciutto and mashed potatoes and topped with grilled onions. It melted in my mouth! Of course, this restaurant isn't cheap but you get what you pay for. Service is top notch also. Truly a unique experience!
