“Playful, experiental and delicious”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 9, 2009

As recent transplant to British Columbia, I asked locals as to what restaurants they recommended. This is one several people mentioned (including the Banana Leaf). There are several Guu locations in Vancouver, but this is the one I frequent most commonly.

It was a cold, blustery, snowy evening when we ventured down to Gastown to try this highly recommended restaurant - 'something something Guu' (I couldn't remember the full name, nor can I remember it now). I showed up to Water St. without an address, but just a general idea of where it was. I had to ask some conceirge at a nearby tourist station to show me where it was located (The signage was a little folded sandwich sign that was sitting on the sidewalk and it was up some stairs).

Upon walking in, your are greeted with calls from all the employees to welcome you in. The lofty style restaurant is hip, fun and the menu is cooler than cool. The cocktail menu is like a bubble map of wonderful drink opportunities and the food menu is written in playful print. When in doubt - try plum wine or there is this incredible tuna, mango, avocado dish (can't remember what it is called).

People say that Vancouver has incredible Asian food and being a recent transplant from San Francisco, was having difficulty finding great places. But in Guu I have found not only a favourite, but a place I highly recommend and usually bring all my out of town guests to enjoy the experience and the great food.

If you want to get drunk, go to Kitanoya Guu otokomae. There are interesting drinks. Both food and drink were so good. I liked Aurora cocktail, which is mixed pomegranate & lychee. My boyfriend really loved Sake mojito with Ramune (lemon-like soda). For food, we order daikon salad, Takoyaki, Ebi-mayo, chicken karaage, rice gratin with scallop & clam chowder, and banana tempura with coconut ice cream. We enjoyed all! Warm banana was not my taste, but he said he will order it again! (Visited and reviewed on Oct, 2008)
