“Gastown's Only Indian Restaurant”

Not the best Indian food but they are open long hours and deliver. The Butter chicken is one of the best dishes. Small wine list and mediocre draught beers. Not the friendliest service.

“Great Indian food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 10, 2012

The lamb vindaloo was just about the best that I've had and the owner was very nice as was the staff. Their house red was very nice. The check was a bit slow in coming though.

“Best Indian Food in Vancouver”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

We actually returned to this restaurant for a second helping because we loved the food so much. It is located a block eastward of the steam clock in historic Gastown, opposite the famous statue of Gassy Jack on the roundabout. There thali's were excellent and portions were generous. The owner even pitched in a free draft beer while I waited for my takeaway order and pitched in all the indian condiments I wanted free. Great service mate!

“What has happened to Sitar?”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2012

This used to be one of the best Indian places in Vancouver - was even written up as such, and the food was noticeably better prepared than most.

However, the last two times we've been there (including tonight), the food quality has noticeably deteriorated. Tonight we had:
- Samosa - not stuffed as full as they used to be, soggy pastry
- Mulligatawny soup - this was good, is always good, no complaints here
- Chicken pakora - was a joke, a few thin strips of pakora, maybe equal to about half a Wendy's chickenburger patty - certainly not worth the $8 fee
- Onion Bhaji - soggy, which was so disappointing as they made the best I ever had
- Butter chicken - mostly sauce with about 6 pieces of chicken in it
- Ghosht Biryani - used to be amazing rice with lots of lamb, and was dense and filling, now it is a few pieces of meat, has a much more 'wet' texture and the quality o the rice is much less.

Very very disappointing. Used to love it, but I think that will be the last time we eat here. It's always been somewhat expensive but seemed worth it for the quality of the food. Not so much now. Might as well pay less or quality elsewhere.

Also, if you go to the VCHA site, you'll discover that they have an ongoing problem with cockroaches. Maybe they just can't keep things up to snuf!

“Ummmmm....no.”

I have always enjoyed the food at the Sitar, especially the veggie curry! MMmmm. But I have to say, once I started to read the health violations on line, I couldn't go back.
