“Blandest Mexican food in Van”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 18, 2011

I spent most of my life in Southern California and so while I have high standards, the food at this place is bad even for Vancouver. The real issue is not the food quality but that it has no rich or spicy flavor. When the owner asked me how I liked the food she flat out said she caters to the Canadian palette. She was very hospitable and has a good voice- if you're lucky she might break out the guitar for a ballad.

“would not go back”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2010

The service was almost too rushed. We barely sat down and the waitress asked what we wanted to order. We ordered a drink first and then as the she stood waiting at our table we felt we had to order our food as well, not busy enough in the restaurant to move us through quickly. Anyhow beer is cheap, the marguarita was not so good. The beef faijata was chewy, it had some flavor but that was about it. The enchillada vallarta was ok nothing great. The only flavourable item that we tasted was the salsa that we got before our meal. I think the people owning and working in the restaurant are working really hard, but there is something missing and I think it is flavour. We would not go back here again. Sorry.

“A mix of great and so-so”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2009

We were in the mood for Mexican, so we went somewhere close. Some things were excellent (salsa, guacamole, service, quick arrival of meal) while others were average or a bit "ho hum" (store-bought tortilla chips, meat needed more seasoning/marinating, rice a bit bland, atmosphere a bit drab). Vancouver being a city of great restaurants of all types, there's no reason not to expect good basic Mexican along with the great Indian, Asian, American, French, etc. options there. It wasn't terrible, it just wasn't that great. Truly a mix of highs and lows. By improving a few things as noted above, they have the potential of being top notch.

Incidentally, not the restaurant's fault, but parking is a real challenge. Walk there or take public transit if you can, or be prepared to drive around and walk quite a way once you find a place to park. They're near a residential "permit only" parking zone and also a very busy restaurant district. As with much of Vancouver, competition for parking is fierce.

P.S. If you just need salsa or guacamole, maybe they sell it to go--both very good!

“Best Mexican in Vancouver!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2009

We've been going to Poncho's for over 20 years. The menu changes some with time, but the food, atmosphere, and owners are still the best! It's homey, noisy and lots of fun, and the food can't be beat!

If you want a truly mouth-watering dinner with a variety of flavours, try either the Carne Mexicana or the Carne Tampequena. If these don't please you and give you more than your money's worth, you must be setting near impossible standards.

“Tasty Mexican in Vancouver”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2008

My husband and i stumbled across Poncho's on our last night in Vancouver (had it been our first night i think we would have eaten there every night). It was packed to rafters with locals ( surely a good sign) but we didn't have to wait long to be served. We were treated to a huge bowl of complimentary nachos and salsa whilst we waited for our main courses which were also huge and delicious. The dishes tasted truly authentic and the margaritas were fantastic ! It was great value for money, 3 bottles of Corona, 1 huge margarita, 2 main courses and some guacomole for $50, bargain!
