“Great food, great price, excellent service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 27, 2014

I heard a lot of good things about this place so decided to try it out as well. We went there in mid January (this place was quite popular, we wanted to get a table later in the month but were told that they were fully booked till February 11 - probably due to Dine Out). They have a different menu every month and I found the food very delicious. I like the fact that chefs and some of the servers are students of the culinary school and I think that's why they try "harder" compared to some other more established restaurants.

It was $26 for a 3-course meal and they used good, fresh ingredients. The price is very reasonable in my view.

The only con is that parking was kind of hard to find. They have some parking spots for customers and street parking may be available if you are lucky. For that I would suggest try to go there early (no later than 6:30pm) to take advantage of the parking they offer to patrons.

“nothing special here”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 8, 2013

Had to try try the food here because of the mostly favourable reviews. Four of us came for dinner. I must say I find the food here not worthy of the high praise. I find it to be average or just above so. The service was above par, and the price was very reasonable. One of us had the risotto appetizer and found that it was not warm enough. Presumably it was prepared in bulk and microwaved to warm it up, but the heating was uneven. We found the entrees OK but not "unique" or "gem" as was found by some. The desserts were also just OK. So why the differences?
Perhaps because the foods are prepared by students and the menus vary from time to time, so the quality of preparations can be variable. Some students might be less enthusiastic or have an off day. Overall I'd score it 7 out of 10.

“Unique Food Art”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 6, 2013

We were greeted by a very charming and affable host in this most elegant restaurant. Our table for 2 offered an interesting view of the kitchen chef's by wall mounted TV's, or of the kitchen itself, or of the harbour and bridge area. Lunch was an affordable $20 for an appy, entree and dessert. A selection of tasty buns and crackers were offered with whipped butter. The lunch portions were very small, however it was the presentation that was most exquisite. The prawn on the sirloin and prawn mixed grill was mouthwatering, however the sirloin was very average. The unusual herring appy was very good and the toffee cake was delicious. It was wine Wednesday, so the bottle of wine was half price. I ordered a tea and a box of teas was presented for my choice and the tea was very very good.

“A great experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 4, 2013

As out-of-towners, the very positive Trip Advisor reviews directed us to Bistro 101 for a 30th anniversary celebration with another couple. We all agreed that it had been an excellent choice. The restaurant itself is inviting and comfortable, the food ranged from good to excellent, but it was the conversations with students that made the evening for us. The night we were there (perhaps it's like this every night?), there was a buffet table with a wide array of appies, the main was a taster plate with three entrees, and again, there was a buffet table with many desserts. Not everything was wonderful, but as we love tasting little bits of this and little bits of that, we really enjoyed it. One of the mains was completely delicious fish. Another was steak, which was not wonderful, and which didn't come rare as requested. But instead of feeling as though we were complaining when we mentioned that to our server, from his response, we just felt that it had been important feedback, not a whine. The staff--almost all students--were great, and more than pleased to answer questions about their experience and the food. We also enjoyed being able to watch the kitchen preparation through large windows provided for that purpose. Of course, one of the great pluses was the very reasonable charge for the food. Wines were priced reasonably too. All in all a great experience.

“A Hidden Gem!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 25, 2013

My husband and I have lived just a short walk away from Bistro 101 for years but only recently discovered this hidden gem. The food is fabulous - and offers an incredible value with a three course meal for less than $30...and the best part - the half price wine Wednesday feature makes it a very affordable evening, even with wine! The manager of the restaurant is a treat - his knowledge of food and wine and his sense of humour add an interesting touch to the night. Definitely worth checking out!
