I recently went there on a Thursday evening around 5:30 pm. The name has actually changed to Ichiban-ya.

In short:

Decor is very traditional japanese oriented, nothing special but clean.

There was only one waiter/owner (my guess) and one sushiman. Even if it wasn't super busy, we understandably had to wait a little to order, since the waiter had to manage the cash at the same time. However, our food came SUPER quickly after that, with even a complimentary miso soup for the wait. Very nice of them.

Foodwise, it's fair, nothing extraordinary, but definitely not horrible. The previous reviews were not good, maybe it has changed since then. We were satisfied with the taste and variety of maki available. Our only little criticism is a little too much rice in the makis, but it's not critical.

Price is also fair: 3.75-6.50 on average, some special ones a bit more expensive.

All in all, it's pretty convenient, so if you want a quick, reasonable quality sushi, this place is worth the try.

My wife and tried this place because I thought I had read good things about it. Bad mistake!

The restaurant is conveniently located on Thurlow Street just off Robson Street. That is the best I can say about it, although as noted above we did not get sick.

The restaurant is down a flight of stairs, after which you enter a rather dark, non descript (decrepid?) room with the sorriest little sushi bar I have ever seen. The room does have some windows which allow in street light, but there is NO atmosphere whatsoever.

The menu is large and varied, and to be honest the prices are very reasonable ... if only the food were good. All of the sushi offerings we tried we tired and flat ... no sickening but absolutely not fresh and sparkling.

The service was rushed bordering on rude. At the end I questioned the bill because of the inclusion of a 12% add on that was not well-described. It turns out that this is a "service charge" which is automatically added to your bill. That would be fine if it were noted on the menu, but it was not. If you are not careful you can therefore easily double up on the gratuity.

We were happy to get out of here and go somewhere else for dessert to get the taste out of our mouths.

This used to be some of the best sushi in the city. Nearly transcendent. Then the owners sold it. Since then it has plummeted in quality and service. Avoid it if you're downtown, go to Tanpopo or Kami Royale which has really up'd it's game.

Used to be a favorite... all downhill since the ownership change and removal of the floating sushi bar a few years ago.

Not as fun as when it was Kai-ten sushi (rotating bar).
